Z580 and Windows reinstallation question

2018-05-22, 2:03 AM

I have multiple Lenovo laptops in the family. I recently noticed a Z580 had not had any OS updates since December 2017. So I fiddled with it some (it has been running Windows 10 for a couple of years without issue) and upgraded to Win10 1803. This was a huge mistake as I was unaware that the Z580 has hardware components not compatible with Win 10... even though it's been running Win10 for years.

After the upgrade to 1803, the PC boots to a blue screenn where it wants me to choose the system language, etc. IE, it has totally lost the operating system and it can't find anything to roll back to in recovery.

I was perfectly happy with Win 8.1 and only upgraded to Win10 figuring it was an inevitable upgrade. I plan to replace the HDD with a SSD and believe I can get the data from the HDD. But I"m stumped as to what OS I should put back on the Z580, since it came preinstalled. Is the Windows key embedded in the ROM? I don't have a Windows key for this 5 year old laptop and don't recall seeing one when we bought it.

Any suggestions?

If Win10/1803 is not viable on the Z580, what are my options? Win 8.1 support ended in January 2018. So I'm stumped as to what fully supported version of Windows I'm supposed to use on the Z580? Reinstall 1709?

Hi speedlever,

I think that the below service tip which has just been released might be relevant to your situation with the Z580, perhaps you could review it and the offered solutions and let us know if it helped?

Thanks Andy. Unfortunately, that is not the issue I'm facing. That deals with a black screen and rotating circle. In my case, after the update of 1803, upon reboot, I'm presented with a choice of keyboard layout options... USA... etc. If I choose troubleshoot and help, none of the rollback options work, they all send me back to that first screen to choose keyboard layout.

MS says its a bug in the update. Well great. That certainly doesn't help me recover.

So my plan is to swap out the HDD with a new SSD and do a clean install of W10. Afterwards I hope to be able to plug in the old HDD externally and get my files. The only problem is that the only drivers from Lenovo support are for Win7 and Win8/8.1. So I chose Win 8.1 drivers and hope they work.

Re: Z580 and Windows reinstallation question

I downloaded the Win10 x64 v1803 ISO and created a bootable USB stick with Rufus. I set it up as GPT (MBR did not work) and installed a clean copy of Win10 to the new Samsung 860 Evo 250GB drive I installed in place of the old HDD. So far, I've not had to deal with any of the old drivers for the Z580. Win10 is doing a great job with all the device drivers, even the volume controls at the top of the number row.

Once I get all the apps installed, I'll attempt to rescue the data from the old HDD via an external enclosure. But so far, a clean install of 1803 from the bootable USB stick seems to be working fine. The OTA upgrade was a FAIL.

Now I'm curious as to why the Z580 is not on the list of approved W10 devices, but oh well.
