Hello all, I'm currently having issues with my Z585 and am wondering if I can salvage it.
I have 8GB of installed RAM but only 3.42GB is usable - I have checked the RAM to make sure that they are compatible, so it's not that. I'm thinking that since I (stupidly) updated to Windows 10, I can't update the BIOS as it only goes up to Windows 8?
Here is a screenshot:
Would anyone be able to help?
EDIT: Forgot to mention that Maximum Memory box is unticked.

Several interview questions:
(1) original owner?
(2) What memory size came with machine at purchase time, ie 4 gb?
(3) What OS installed at purchase time(ie, win 8).
(4) Did you add any new 4GB memory after possible win8 OEM OS? to make 8 GB total?
(5) Please take a picture of both memory stick labels or use CPU-Z or similar(speccy) to show part numbers of memory.
(6) Are both memory sticks 1.5v?
(7) Check task manager, performance, memory tab to see how much memory is hardware reserved.
Provide a screen shot of this.
(8) If you added any new memory (4GB) to OEM 4GB, is it Kingston value ram?

(1) Yes I am the original owner.
(2) Came with 8gb RAM.
(3) Windows 8.
(4) No extra memory added.
(6) Yes, both are 1.5v.
(8) I haven't added new memory.

I suspect your graphics is eating your memory.
Some google searchs show this:
In BIOS there may be an option to adjust shared video memory, sometimes called the frame buffer size . It may have a use memory over 4GB for graphics option.
Some folks state this option is not in their BIOS.
Google search your graphic card model and see if any other suggestions show up.
Your 2 memory sticks look fine.
Check your pagefile options. Is pagefile a fixed size? Set it to system managed.

(2) Came with 8gb RAM.
If you look in the lower right corner of the last screen shot that you posted, you will see that the "Hardware reserved RAM" is 4.6GB(!). Read the following thread (it may apply to you too):

Please confirm page file size is not a fixed size.
Hey Cyber. User stated in post 1, max memory in msconfig unticked.
Cyber and I both see 4.6 GB system reserved. You see 3.2 GB useable only.
Some items to try:
(1) Remove both memory sticks. Boot in slot 1 with 4GB only. Check system reserverd.
(2) Same as step 1, use the other stick.
(3) Same as step 1 and 2, but use the other memory slot 2.
Create bootable CD image, and test memory overnight. Test runs a long time.
This is just to confirm both memory sticks are good and both slots are good.
Did you ever check system reserved size while win 8 was installed?

Hey sclexman, I checked both RAM and hadn't attempted to remove them... when I did I discovered that a sticker from when the laptop was put together was partly covering one of the RAM ports.
I tested both sticks in both slots and hardware reserved is 589MB. Both sticks together now shows my hardware reserved at 589MB...
However the boot time was much faster when I only have one stick in whichever slot - when I put both in the boot time was around 20 seconds, whereas it was around 3 seconds with one.
Usable RAM is now up to 7.42GB - but my laptop doesn't feel any faster.
EDIT: forgot to mention pagefile is not fixed size, and I never checked the hardware reserved size when I had win 8. Going to run memtest86 overnight to check everything works fine.

I know it's been a little while since you've dealt with your memory problem. I have a very similar situation. I have a Lenovo Yoga - Type 20CD laptop from 2014 that has 8 gb installed, only 3.42 usable, and 4.6 showing as reserve. However, as I understand for my laptop, the memory is soldered to the motherboard. I have unchecked the maximum memory box and also have windows managing pagination.
The laptop originally had windows 8.1 installed and now it has windows 10 home.
Do you have any ideas that could help for me?
EDIT: I have gone through the bios to see if there were any toggles to adjust video useage etc. I have tried several of the suggestions but can't seem to increase the amount of useable RAM. When I boot, the bios and system recognize that there is 8GB of RAM, but only 3.42 gb is useable.
Do I understand your post correctly in that you think what fixed your situation was moving a label that was blocking part of the RAM slot, or do you think that something else was culprit?
