Z70-80 Hard Disk 100%

Brand new Z70-80 that I bought yesterday. Hard disk utilization is pretty much pegged at 100% all the time, and I have no idea how to figure out what is causing it. Task Manager says that "System" is using 2.5 MB/s, and my laptop is slow to respond to a lot of things.

Re: Z70-80 Hard Disk 100%

tried it, but came to the realization that chrome is the culprit. if i
leave the laptop idling after startup, everything is cool. as soon as i
start chrome it spikes, though task manager still shows "system" as the
major disk user. chrome problem i guess?

Did you mean Task Manager the Task manager in Windows?

Yes, when Chrome is running, my Windows Task Manager looks like this…

Within ten seconds of exiting Chrome, it looks like this…

Re: Z70-80 Hard Disk 100%

While Chrome is running press Shift + Esc Keys. You should now see the Task Manager in Chrome. For an estimate of how much ram is use click Stats for Nerds. To add more function right click one entry and put a check mark on what you want to be included.  You can try to disable some of the entries to reduce the memory utilize by Chrome. If these can't solve the problem of memory utilize by Chrome try resetting Chrome.

Re: Z70-80 Hard Disk 100%

That got me thinking. After I reset Chrome, HDD usage went to normal. I enabled extensions one by one, and all was normal.. I logged into Gmail, and it spiked and stayed at 100%. Interestingly, now that I've closed gmail, but am editing this comment, it's staying at 100% HDD usage. Will replay again after I close this tab and see how HDD activity reacts

Re: Z70-80 Hard Disk 100%

I don't get it. I never had this problem with my Windows 7 machine (HP ProBook 4540s) After browsing to gmail page, it seems to calm down a little, but still far more HDD use than I'm used to. Editing this comment isn't much better for HDD usage. So confused, and I can't find a pattern. Maybe try again tomorrow. Brain is dead.

Re: Z70-80 Hard Disk 100%

Hey, I am having the exact same problem. At first I also thought it was Chrome...so I uninstalled it and everything was fine for a whiile...Then the hard disk activity began getting worse. Now I cant even loggon to windows without it taking at least 30 min. By the way, I did a clean boot and everything seemed normal, but then the same pattern started all over again. I have been struggling for months with this.

On the other hand I use Ubuntu on the same laptop with no problems at all...

I have read it can possibly be a Hard Disk malfunction, and in most cases manufacturer will change the HDD, but since my laptop is out of warranty I havent tried that.

Let me know if you learn more about this issue.
