I don't get it. I never had this problem with my Windows 7 machine (HP ProBook 4540s) After browsing to gmail page, it seems to calm down a little, but still far more HDD use than I'm used to. Editing this comment isn't much better for HDD usage. So confused, and I can't find a pattern. Maybe try again tomorrow. Brain is dead.

Chrome in the past is known to use so much memory so you do the previous steps to get it down a little. From an examination of the task manager in Chrome if one entry indicates a large usage of ram it could mean a malware/spam/virus. So do a thorough scan. Don't rely in one scanner only do a second scan using a different scanner.

If things still is worse uninstall Chrome then reinstall.

Better use virtual machine and install xp on it. You can use VitualBox, VM, or Hyper-V. This way you won't be bothered with needed drivers which you will not find for your new unit.

mmm, i haven't tried that in ages. have to see if i still remember how to do it. good thing i kept those old XP discs. i mean, the hardware on this thing is great, but it seems like a lot of people are having a problem with Chrome and Windows 8.1. honestly, switching from 7Pro to 8.1 was by biggest fear buying this new machine.

Eventually it should stop whatever the system is trying to accomplish. Maybe its defragging or doing some scan.

:/ as far as I can tell, it's only when I have Chrome running. Ran malware and virus scans, and found Superfish, which I removed. Lenovo's Superfish removal tool didn't get it all, though I think IObit Malware Fighter managed to kill it. Going to see if reinstalling Chrome helps.

As soon as I start Chrome, HDD jumps to 99% and stays there. X(
