Z710 Drive Caddy

2014-01-03, 23:34 PM

Has anyone experimented with installing an optic bay drive caddy on the z710?

Is there an universal size which I can buy and then switch the bezel?

It appears that might is just a regular DVD player/burner. Would that make it a 9.5 or 12.5?

Don't buy one from the UK site.

It actually ships from Singapore. The company is neiither speedy in responding, resolving nor the speed with which they ship the product, especially considering they use "air mail."

I ordered one on the 4th of January. It has yet to arrive. The company's response is that it remains in transit.

Having purchased a drive caddy from both companies listed earlier, I can say this.

The US company is closer to me and had amazing customer service. I actually drove down and they helped me change out the bezel so I wouldn't break it. However, the fit on the chassis was not perfect but they are working on it.

The "UK" company actually ships from Singapore. It took three weeks for mine to arrive. When it did, I switched out the caddies and found the "UK" model to be a slightly better fit with less hardware.

Unfortunetly, until a bios update with a fix is pushed out, with the Ideacenter Z710, a 2nd hard drive in the caddy results in a boot loop. You will have to use the Novo button and select the Windows Boot Manager each time you turn the computer on. Other than that, with a quality SSD, you can achieve an 8 second boot time.

I had an issue when I used the original HDD in the caddy (after I cloned it on an SSD).. but with different HDD, the caddy works just fine :)

So you are saying you got this to work with both drives installed and all you did was replaced the original drive that you moved to the caddy, and replaced that drive with another drive?
