Re: ideapad z580

As far as I can see, you have an Intel Core i7-3520M. Did it actually come with this CPU, or did you upgrade to it yourself?

Listing specs yourself is also more practical than attaching a HUGE xml file created from some app.

Re: ideapad z580

Hi Snemcov,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

In addition, it would be convenient if you still run diagnostics and try measuring up the internal temp with tools like this. System shutdown with related approximate duration does reflect possible internal heating.

Cleaning the vents and re application of thermal compounds can usually help. You may start first with the diagnostics and rerun perhaps both diagnostics and thermal test after 20 minutes.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: ideapad z580

Well, in my experience, that happens when you have a laptop running Intel's HM70 chipset and upgrade to any Intel Core CPU. The chipset only runs Celeron and Pentium, and I know for a fact that the CPU in this laptop is socketed. This problem, in the way I described, is also being discussed in the Russian Lenovo forums. It is a problem with the Intel Management Engine, which you easily can find out. Go to the device manager and screenshot the category System devices. When a device called Intel Management Engine doesn't show up, it is what I said. The problem apparently has to do with the fact that the CPUs in the Core lineup have an anti-theft feature which the chipset doesn't properly support. And that makes the laptop shut off after exactly half an hour. Go into the BIOS and leave it there. If it turns off after half an hour, it is this problem. If it doesn't, it may be related to a faulty BIOS or the thermals.

Re: ideapad z580

Hm, okay. That usually is the first step that Lenovo staff expect users to do, though in most cases (like my laptops WiFi) it doesn't show useful results. Could you please screenshot the "System devices" category in the device manager for me?

Re: ideapad z580

Yes, it also turns off in the BIOS, there is no Intel Management Engine driver, what should I do?

Re: ideapad z580

In that case, my presumption proves to be correct - you most likely have a HM70 chipset (although it lists itself as HM76). That means you can only use - at best - an Intel Pentium 2030M, unless you want to go the unofficial way and risk bricking your mainboard (using specified, unofficially obtained Intel firmware flashing software and reprogramming the Intel Management Engine firmware). There is nothing else you can do about it besides switching to either a motherboard with an HM77 chipset or going to an Intel Pentium 2xxx CPU.
