For those with Windows 8: Try to boot in safe mode and uninstall the wifi card driver. Be sure to check the delete box to completely uninstall the driver. Reboot and let windows install its own wifi driver (not the manufacturer's driver). You should now have a stable connection.

I think I got it figured out. I don't think its a drive issue, it's just that sometimes it starts turned off. So I went to device manager and chose not to "turn off this device to save power", and that solves most of the problem. Then, whenever the internet doesnt work, I go to Fn+F5 and it shows Wifi is off even though I didnt turn it off last session, so I just turn it on there.

I think that's not how it should work. If airplane mode is off (this mean wifi is on) upon reboot you should still have airplane mode off. If airplane mode is on (wifi is off), upon reboot airplane mode would still be on.

The airplane mode thing doesnt work like how I'd expect it to anyways. On my old Asus UL20A, pressing the Fn and F# button turns on and off the wireless. But Lenovo's is different; it opens a window and you can choose on/off. Plus, after this "breakthrough" I never had any issues with Wifi again

I know this question is somewhat old at this point, but I had the same exact problem. Here is what fixed it for me:

1. Access the list of available networks by clicking on your wifi signal in the bottom right (or top right depending on your settings) corner.

2. Right click on the network you are having issues with.

3. Click on view connection properties. (This should open up a new window with the connection properties.)

4. Click on the connection tab.

5. Make sure the checkbox with, "Enable Intel connection settings" is checked (aka make sure it's enabled).

That ended up working for me. Hope this helps!

i think i found a solution for the wifi issue. note that i a running W7 64bit service pack 1.

see the reply by victor in the link below on page 2 and change the settings according to his instructions

https://communities.intel.com/thread/32017?start=15&tstart=0

Victors approach worked for me - but also try changing the Security/Encryption Type of your wifi to  WPA2/AES.

hope this helps. i know its a very generic fix, but it worked more me and its better than waiting around for lenovo and intel to create a patch.

This helped me too

I guess I have to be the one to revive the old thread. None of the above suggestions are working for me. I never actually lose the connection --it's more that the data just stops flowing. Anything new on this? The Intel drivers didn't help.

Does this happen in the middle of using internet? Or is it when sometimes you boot up? If it's the latter, maybe the wireless turned off, press Fn F5 to turn it back on. Idk why sometimes when I poweron/wake computer, it auto-shut off wifi. If its the first situation, idk. I never had it drop a connection. Maybe you are very far from WAP? Or maybe too many people using the WAP?

With all the back and forth on the WiFi issues on the Y500, it looked like somebody said at one time that the BIOS in the Y500 restricted swapping out the WiFi card for another one?

We would like to try this... installing a newer WiFi card that is AC and dual band compatible.  We don't care about bluetooth.

Has anybody successfully done this?  If so, what was the brand / model of the card you used and any special hoops you had the jump through.

Our Y500 has Win 8.1 running.

Thanks,

T
