Hi all tech pro,
Can i have your guys advice for wifi card upgrade also the SSD upgrade for Y50-70 which about 3 years old.
1. I plan to upgrade the Intel AC3160 to Intel AC 8265, however, some thread showing that there have some Lenovo BIOS restriction, which not allow new card to install, do we have any workaround or any proper method to upgrade the wifi card?
2. I have plan to upgrade the existing 1tb HDD to 512gb SSD, is there any compatible brand/model can recommend? Also how to migrate the entire OS to the new SSD? Lastly, whether the BIOS will block any new SSD to install on it?
Deeply appreciate for anyone can enlighten me....

Welcome to the Community Forums.
BIOS whitelist may be one of the challenges to another WLAN upgrade as the hardware FRU list would only offer:
Part number 20200552 WirelessLan_Intel, Intel 7260 2x2AC+BT PCIE M.2 WLAN V2
Part number 20200418 WirelessLan_Intel, Intel 3160 1x1AC+BT PCIE NGFF WLAN
Modifying BIOS is not recommended as it poses more risk on bricking the system board for just the upgrade.
Upgrade verified working by a fellow member with Samsung 840 Evo under this discussion.
About migration, this discussion has options that you can try.
Hope this help answer your query.

Thabks for you support, Intel 8265 not a new product but consider the latest Intel wifi card which available at this moment.
Is there any other Lenovo laptop model using it? If i manage to get the part for other Lenovo model, can i upgrade the bios version to support the wifi card?
Intel 7260 approaching EOL already, not really a good upgrade choice, right?
I personally prefer SANDISK SSD whichbis more affordable and reliable as well. Whether the BIOS will block and cannot identify the SANDISK ssd?

It can be worth a try to check if the BIOS would allow the replacement WLAN card to be recognized.
Not very optimistic about upgrading BIOS would help either if not specified on the readme file.
It may not be a good upgrade for the Intel 7260 but alternative USB WLAN adapter can be an option although it would look sticking on the side.
Sandisk may work but I noticed this strange post.

Hi Spidey 101,
You are so helpful, thanks a lot.
Anyway, the Y50-70 seems like not upgrade friendly... I will play safe and use the Intel 7620, which is not a satisfy upgrade... how come Lenovo ask their users upgrade with EOL product, doesn't make sense at all.
Yup, that Sandisk SSD upgrade thread is a a strange post, first time heard that SSD upgrade will affected display, hahahaha, that is so dissappointed, god bless him.
Samsung Evo out of my budget, then any cheaper SSD can recommend?

Can you tell me which specific sandisk model you used to upgrade?
