msata drive not visible in Disk Management - Windows 8.1 Lenovo y510p

I purchased and installed a 128GB m.2 SSD into my Lenovo Y510P. The original hard drive is the 1TB hybrid SSHD, and it is still installed in the computer. It is partitioned into C: and D:, in addition to the hidden/recovery partitions. When I boot into the Bios setup, the new SSD appears as one of the disk drives on the (first??) page, but it does not appear as one of the potential boot devices. The boot mode is NOT Legacy (sorry, I don't recall the correct jargon). When I boot into Windows and run Disk Management, only one physical disk is visible.

I've looked online for information how to make it visible, without success. Found one article that suggested that some Y510P computers did not have functional port for the SSD, but I don't know how to check if my computer has that issue.

Any advice appreciated how I can get this SSD to function properly.

Thanks.

Does it show up in Device Manager > Disk Drives?

No it does not.
Beginning to wonder whether the slot only supports caching for the main driver, rather than as an independent disk drive. Haven't seen a definitive answer online, although I've seen posts that suggest both configurations have been seen.

In principle, it should be a standard mSATA port. Can you try uninstalling the caching software? Make a restore point beforehand so you can roll back easily.

Looked thru Windows Programs and Features, but did not see anything obvious that was caching software. What program should I uninstall?

TBH I'm not sure. One way to break the caching software (if there is any) is to uninstall the SATA driver and have Windows install its generic default driver.

Check if Sata mode = AHCI. In boot menu set boot mode=legacy, boot option=legacy first. Save and exit. Boot to bios and check if the SSD is recognized. If yes, exit and boot to windows. Check disk management if it is there. If not, check using diskpart.

BTW, is the SSHD a Seagate or Western Digital?

Re: msata drive not visible in Disk Management - Windows 8.1 Lenovo y510p

Glimmer of hope!

Configuring as you suggested results in the boot process stalling because it cannot find a boot device. Makes me think it's trying to boot from the SSD. My next step will be to disk image the O/S to an external drive, then boot from USB and attempt to restore it to the SSD. Hope springs eternal...

When I configured it as Legacy mode, but (not Legacy) first priority, and then booted and went into Device Manager > Disk Drives, it showed the SSD on the list for about three seconds, then it disappeared.

Not sure what brand of disk, but it's reported in Device Manager as ST1000LM014-SSHD-8GB.

I can open the case later today to get the brand if it will help.

The reason that I can think of with the problem is that the ssd can't be access since it is not yet initialized and formatted. Perhaps using diskpart will be able to resolve the issue.

The ST1000LM014 SSHD is a Seagate brand. I had one installed last year in my unit.

Re: msata drive not visible in Disk Management - Windows 8.1 Lenovo y510p

No joy...
I use Macrium Reflect (free) to create a disk image and restore. However, it does not see the SSD. Likewise, diskpart sees only one drive. Very frustrating!
