no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

2019-02-06, 19:23 PM

I have a Y70 Touch that I'm getting the error message "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". It's running Win 8.2. I get the impression that I need to create a bootable USB to run diagnostics but I don't have the product key for the Win 8.2. Wondering if I get another copy of 8.2 somewhere, can I still run the diagnostics on this devce or do I need to get the original one from Lenovo (I don't see anywhere to ask them a simple question like that). Also wondering if the data on the drive can be recovered to a second hard drive without going through some expensive service. I had backup software on the device, but apparently it wasn't actually backing up for the last year or so.

It's my son's device and there's nothing like school or work data on it so I don't want to sink a lot of money into the recovery, but don't want to have to get another device as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Wiz74,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It would always be best to try to back up the files first if possible before any steps are to be done. I usually remove the harddrive inside and place it on another machine like my desktop or external harddrive enclosure to back up. This also allows me to check the condition of the drive if still readable or if I need to replace it.

A recovery media can be purchased from lenovo or simply try to create it if the hidden image is still ok (via One Key Recovery) and to even factory restore it. If the factory image is corrupt either physically or by its software then it may not work.

On this condition, you can simply download the Windows 8.1 image ISO to create an installer on a USB stick and perform repair or clean installation of Windows for free. The product key is on the motherboard and will automatically activate it as long as you use the same version of your pre-installed Windows.

I hope this helps answer your query.
