I have an old Lenovo Z410 and I'm planning to install an m.2 SSD in it, but before I'd like to install it, I'm thinking about whether should I buy a 2280 or a 2242 build? Since I don't actually have any idea about the space available on the mini PCI-e slot, and also would it perform much more effectively rather than the mSATA ones since it's using a mini PCI-e slot (so it requires an adapter)? Or should I just go with the mSATA? Thank you.

Welcome to the Community Forums.
Product specification (page 26) for storage on this model do not prescribe mSATA or m.2 PCIe /SATA aside from the same HDD 2.5.
I would encourage you to check physically for the available slot which I guess would be the same mini PCIe slot intended for the wireless card. This slot would appear similar to msata and may even allow to fit it in but is architecturally different.
It only have two lanes so transmission speed would not serve the purpose of having a faster m.2 storage. Replacement of current HDD to another 2.5 SATA SSD can be a more feasible option.
I hope this helps answer your query.
