y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

Seems like ever since the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers update (I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think it's the case), my screen stays black upon being woken up from sleep or hibernation. I know it's on, and it's not a matter of the computer being slow, because it's not, and even if it were, leaving it on for many minutes and it remains blank, and the power button and keyboard and everything light up and it starts heating up, so I know it's doing something. Hitting FN-F2 for the backlight does nothing, so I don't think that's the issue. The only way to resolve it is to hold down the power button and reboot, which pisses me off because sometimes I have important work up and am forced to lose it. Anyone else seeing this issue? Could it be related to the new graphics drivers, or is this something worse and hardware related? My screen seems A-OK when it comes to everything else.

Thank you!

Re: y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

Began having this exact same problem which also seemed to correspond with the May 23rd NVIDIA driver update 368.22. If I put the computer into sleep or hibernate and then wake it up, I get the Lenovo logo briefly then a black screen. Computer is on, keyboard lights up, fans on, no mouse cursor and no combination of hitting any buttons or even putting it back to sleep then re awakening it seems to fix it. The only option is as OP mentioned, force a power down causing you to lose all open programs. I have tried rolling back to a previous driver, but this does not seem to fix anything. I have also tried modifying Power Management and sleep/hibernate settings. This happens on both batery power and AC power.

My Specs:

Lenovo y510p

Windows 8.1 64 Bit

GT 750m x 2 in SLI

Welcome to the Forums Imjust!

It sounds like the GPU is failing to wake. Are you up-to-date with your Intel drivers? First check Lenovo's latest, and if that doesn't work, try the Intel drivers using the Intel Update Utility:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

Installing the new Graphics driver will solve the "Unable to wake from Sleep Problem."

Let us know how you get on.

I have the exact same problem as described above and am running the same specs. Problem was seemingly caused by a Nvidia update on 5/23/2016. I tried the Intel wizard but it did not locate any drivers needing to be updated.

Re: y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

I bought mine used from ebay. It is in good shape, and I am happy with it so far, except for this issue. It really pisses me off. I can hear the startup sounds when my computer wakes up, but the screen doesnt come on. Everything else works-backlight, power button, etc, but no screen. I had to install the new Nvidia driver, too. Are you sure this is the issue?

Re: y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

I absolutely never had this problem before. I just went into control panel > drivers > display > nvidia and rolled back the driver installed there to the last version from March. Seems to have fixed the black screen after closing the lid problem but has now caused my whole computer to completely freeze up and crash twice now this evening, for the first time in all the years I've had this computer. Anybody have any ideas?

Re: y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

I found that if i manually put the computer to sleep before i close the lid, it seems to work fine. You can change the power settings so that when you push the power button, it will put it to sleep, or you can just go to start>power>sleep. I think Fn+F1 puts it to sleep, too It's a little more painstaking than just closing it, but at least you can put it to sleep. Could the problem be fixed when they release new Nvidia driver updates?

Re: y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

I think it's the new drivers as well. My y410p was performing fine until I installed 368.22. After which just closing my laptop resulted in it being unusable upon opening it. As NickManley states,, however I can still manually put it into sleep mode just fine. So as a temporary solution I've set "Closing the lid" to do nothing under the power settings. I may revert back to an older driver and let you guys know if it did indeed make a difference.

Re: y510p Screen stays black upon wake-up from sleep or hibernation

Well everyone, I think I "solved" the problem. The latest NVIDIA drivers I installed the other day fixed the problem. I can sleep, hibernate, shut down, you name it without having the screen not turn on for the last day now. I can't say for sure but I'm 99% certain this was the issue. I appreciate the help nonetheless.
