Re: z500 SSD on ODD

Hi!

I would use ODD space (with caddy) for use a SSD (Vertex4 SATAIII).
The ODD have full sata3 capability?
The original ODD have only SATA speed (1.5) and i not understand if is the ODD itself or the SATA line.

TY!

P.S: If i change the ODD with Caddy+SSD I broke my warranty?

Re: z500 SSD on ODD

From the spec the SATA controller which is embedded in the chipset is 6 Gbps. The usual setup is ssd inplace of the hdd and the hdd place in the caddy. This way boot time is very short. Re warrantee IMHO if you don't break anything you should be good.

Re: z500 SSD on ODD

Thank you for the quick response!

I've thinked to use the SSD on caddy for not dismount half notebook.

I've also checked the SATA controller and is sata3, but I don't understand the correlation between boot speed and selected sata port.

Re: z500 SSD on ODD

The normal boot option is HDD first. So this is the main reason you should place the ssd with the os of course in the hdd's place. In disassembling the unit you will have to open the backcase. See hardware maintenance manual. The fsteps in sequence are the screws holding the keyboard, the keyboard,  the ODD, the backcase screws, and lastly the backcase to access the hdd. If you place the ssd in the caddy and decide to boot on it you will be accessing the boot menu everytime you restart the computer. If you decide to just place it in the caddy without booting from it, it defeats the purpose of the ssd

Re: z500 SSD on ODD

I can't change the boot order from EFI/BIOS?

Re: z500 SSD on ODD

Of course you can. But it seems the booting is more efficiently done through the hdd than through the odd. Anyway, you can always experiment and find out for yourself. Just be sure to have a copy of the okr backup image files tucked away in case something goes wrong and you need to restore the os.
