Can't create DIR when trying to publish 3rd party applications

2020-04-20, 16:57 PM

Hi folks,

I am running into an issue when attempting to publish 3rd party applications via Lenovo patch from SCCM 2012 R2 1906 branch. I was able to do it with 7-zip one time but after that I have not been able to successfully publish any applications once they are downloaded.  I run the Lenovo Patch Configuration checkers and it state CreateDirectory Failed. I have given all rights to the directories I thought that was needed. Can anyone help me understand where the Published application DIR is that is trying to be created that it does not seem to have rights to?  I have the offline settings pointed to my DFS and all rights have been give to my sms writer and users to this share. I am a bit lost here as to why this worked one time for one application then stopped working correctly.

Also the only application I am seeing under managed Products in 7-zip yet I have downloaded a few other application but they are not showing for me to manage. Any input would be helpful.

@Aaron G,

1. On your WSUS server, open the registry and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup.

2. Look for the ContentDir registry value.

3. Navigate to the location referenced in the ContentDir value and then right click on the UpdateServicesPackages folder.

4. Verify and/or set the following Share permissions on the UpdateServicesPackages folder.

    Administrators Group - Full Access

    Network Service - Full Access

    Everyone - Read Access

    WSUS Administrators Group - Full Access

5. Verify and/or set the following NTFS permissions on the UpdateServicesPackages folder.

    Administrators Group - Full Access

    Network Service - Full Access

    SYSTEM - Full Access

    Users Group - Read/List Folder, Read & Execute Access

    WSUS Administrators Group - Full Access

Perform the same configuration for the WSUSContent directory.

In terms of seeing only one product under the Manage Products groupings, this will only show the products that have successfully downloaded.  Once the above steps are completed, try publishing one again and we will see what results come back.

I have done the steps laid out above and sadly I am not seeing a change here. I am still getting the same error. CreateDirectory Failed in the AutoPublish log.

@Aaron G,

Can you PM me your AutoPublish.log file and your LenovoPatch.log file or a link to where I can download them like OneDrive?

Aaron G,

In that log file you provided, I can see the account username you are using to publish the content.  Can you verify that the account has access to the directory structure you checked the permissions on above?  Is that account a member of both the <WSUSServerName>\Administrators group and the <WSUSServerName>\WSUS Administrators group on the WSUS Server?

The CreateDirectory failure is indicating that the account is not able to create the directory in either the UpdateServicesPackages folder or in the WSUSContent folder.

Yes that account does in fact have the rights and is part of the WSUS admins group on the WSUS server. As well as has full control over the content directory as well for WSUS.

@Aaron G,

The issue with the CreateDirectory Failed message is that the API is not able to create the needed directory in the UpdateServicesPackages folder, due to either permissions or share missing.

On the WSUS server, can you open Computer Management (compmgmt.msc) and navigate to the Shared Folders > Shares node in the tree view on the left.  In the center, do you see a Share Name for UpdateServicesPackages and the associated folder path should be listed.

Issue resolved for NTFS and Share permissions on both the UpdateServicesPackages and the WSUSContent folder.
