Unbalanced memory

2018-10-02, 13:03 PM

I am trying to see if anyone else has questioned why the pre-configured models are using unbalanced memory?

Unbalanced memory will result in performance loss, and it is always best to populate memory channels evenly for best performance.

What are your thoughts?

Hello,

I would say it's due to entry price for the servers, but I will go to my ThinkSystem Product Marketing contact to get their view. The memory configuration is bascially left open for the user to configure as desired. Of course, we recomend a balanced configuration. We have the Memory Wizard to help with the optimization, which is launched when configuring the memory within DCSC. Plus, we have various Lenovo Press memory optimization guides.

I will get back to you. :-)

Hello Again...Here is the response from my Server Product Marketing manager...

We do this as these preconfigured models are starting points, and not intended for work loads.  This allows for some base configurations to build from, with less parts to be left on the floor of for example they want 4x 8gb vs 2x16.

Let me know if you have further questions. Cheers.

To add to Bills response, the realtionship or standard models we have are starting points for configurating the server as needed while limiting the amount of possible components that would need to be removed to create the config.  As an example, our SR650 and SR630 Topsellers are stocked in distribution with a single DIMM of memory, 1x CPU and 1 PSU, and do not include backplanes so that we can provide flexability for these models to be configured as needed with our option kits.
