Smart Clock wifi disconnects

2019-06-16, 19:25 PM

My Smart Clock constantly disconnects from wifi and will not reconnect unless I power cycle the Smart Clock.  I have factory reset it multiple times.  It is one room away from my router.  I have tried moving it further away and closer to the router.  My router does not have any Smart Connect settings to turn off as suggested by Google.

My router is the Google ASUS OnHub.  I have 20+ other devices on my router, all of which work fine.

I submitted a help ticket for this issue.  Lenovo did not help with any troubleshooting and instead shipped me a brand new Smart Clock.  I setup this new Smart Clock and within three hours it had disconnected from wifi.

Are you using the 2.4 or 5Ghz band (5Ghz is best for multiple devices and in general)?

Perhaps try cutting off some of the other devices connected to the router and see if the Smart Clock will still disconnect.

If you can setup the Smart Clock on a different router to test it, that would also be ideal. If your cellphone has it's own wifi capabilities, you can try setting up a hotspot with it and see if the Smart Clock stays connected. (Note that doing that with a computer connected to the router's connection would mean the Smart Clock is simply indirectly connected to the router)

Let me know what happens.

Google ASUS OnHub does not allow for manual assignment of devices to 2.4 vs 5 GHz.

I do not see where removing other devices from wifi is an acceptable fix for the Smart Clock disconnecting itself.

It's not a fix, it's simply to see whether or not that's where the issue is. If the issue is there, then we can try to fix it, but we have to figure out where the issue is stemming from first.

I swapped out my Google Asus OnHub for a couple Google WiFi pucks.  The WiFi disconnects on the Smart Clock have stopped.  I'd say it is safe to say there is an incompatibility between the Smart Clock and Google Asus OnHub.

Glad you were able to test it on a different router and fixed the issue!

WiFi connection failures out of the box

2019-06-25, 3:36 AM

I got a Smart Clock a few days ago.

Since the start it would connect to WiFi and funciton after reboot just fine. About 5 minutes in, anything it did became delayed.

i.e. Ok Google "what time is it" now became delayed by 30+ seconds.

This generally indicates a bad network connection.

I've tried everything from resetting it. Moving it to an exclusive 2.4ghz ssid, then a 5ghz exclusive ssid. Moving it smack under an AP.

I have a pretty extensive UniFi network. UniFi sees the device with near perfect signal. It does however occasional report the device is exhibiting severe TCP latency.

Not sure what to do besides warranty it :/

Support sent a replacement device.

Still doesn't work properly :/

I also redid my network by repositioning APs and adding a newer model Unifi AP closer to where the clock sits. All APs were set to separate channels.

Both units are acting up after a few minutes of connecting to wifi.

Eventually both lose the ability to connect to wifi altogether without reboot.

If you try setting them up again with reboot like it prompts, it literally has no ability to see ANY SSID. (Mine and the load of all the neighbors as I live in an apartment style building).

Meanwhile, here's all the SSIDs the phone can see while next to the bloody things at the same time.

Once the clock is rebooted, it can see the SSIDs again.

Can you confirm what router you have and if it has a combined 2.4 and 5ghz signal?
