I spent the weekend digging into this a bit. I thought I had tried everything but realized I hadn't started with a fresh "home" in the app.
I started by creating a new "home" in the Google Home app and added only the Smart Display. To my surprise and excitement, the new Home Status features worked! So with that, I figured that it had to be one of the integrations/apps that I had added to my regular "Home". I readded the Smart Display back to my "Home" and then removed integrations one-by-one (luckily I only have 4). Upon removing the second integration, IOCare (for an Air Purifier), the Home Status began working again and has worked ever since.
tldr: I solved it! It was a bad app/integration and upon removing one-by-one to find the culprit, I am back in business.

Very happy to hear this was sorted out.
2 things I would like to ask you for if you can:
1. Can you please send feedback to Google on the device, just like before using the same hashtag?
2. Any chance of giving us a more detailed description of how you troubleshoot in case this happens to other users in the future?

I also experienced constant random restarts on my 10" Smart Display. In my quest for a resolution, Google led me here.
Nothing here heped, but after some playing around, I managed to resolve the issue by disabling UPnP on my router. That seemed to do the trick... going on a few hours now and no more restarts.
