Green Screen problem

Good day, I was using my Lenovo laptop yesterday like i normally do and suddenly there Is grid like lines on my screen. My laptop has never been damaged before. I dont know how to solve this. I tried going to the system BIOS and the lines were there as well. And I have exams coming up it's a total disaster.

Re:Green Screen problem

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Hi @Carridice123.

I'm sorry to read that your screen had an issue.

I have some steps here that can tell if this can be a potential hardware failure. These steps are not potential fix but rather doing these steps will confirm if this is a hardware issue.

Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop's HDMI port and then observe if the screen flickering/glitching/lines on laptop LCD will also show up or be duplicated on the external monitor you've connected.

If the external monitor shows fine display in contrast to laptop LCD, then the laptop has potential screen issue.

Try booting to Novo Menu or BIOS as well then observe if the laptop screen issue (glitch, flickering, lines, distortion, etc) will occur.

Don't forget to test this in battery mode and when connected to ac adapter.

Perform a static discharge/power cycle
- Remove all cables connected to the device (power cable, hdmi, external mouse, external keyboard, etc)
- Be sure device is switched off / powered off
- Press and hold down the power button for 60 seconds
- When done, re-attach all cables
- Attach the  ac adapter and let the unit charge for about couple of minutes

Boot through Novo button
- Locate your machine's Novo button from the either sides. Check this knowledge base showing how it would look like: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/solutions/ht062552-introduction-to-novo-button-ideapad
- Click this by using an unfolded paperclip or anything similar that would fit.
- Machine should power up and boot straight to Novo Menu.
- Navigate and select using the arrow keys to BIOS Set Up.

Take a moment and observe if the said display issue (flickering, glitch, lines, distortion, etc) will also occur within this BIOS interface, if you will still be able to see anything clear in the BIOS at all.

Lastly, tilt or move the screen backwards and forwards to see if the screen will be triggered to respond with screen glitch/flickering by this LCD movement.

If the screen flickering showed up in bios and still present when moving the screen, then this is possibly hardware failure.

Was the BIOS clear and visible? Or are you still seeing the glitch in BIOS?

Let us know how it goes.

Regards.
Dex

Re:Green Screen problem

The screen is not flickering even when I move it back and forth and when I press on it. The grid lines are just there not moving. I tried pressing the small button as you said and boot it up again but it shows same green lines. However there was no problem with my neighbors screen when i connect it.

Re:Green Screen problem

Hi,

Thanks for the response and for going through the recommended steps. If that is the result of all the steps done, then it is apparently a hardware failure on the LCD. I am confident that this would be better reported to the technical support department in your region so they can create a case number for your unit and discuss options for service.

You may still use it with a connected external monitor however I don't think that would be convenient.

You can also consult any nearby service facility in your region so a tech can check the unit in person and offer service if available.

Regards.

Re:Green Screen problem

I would have contact them from yesterday if I had the cash I am a university student. Studying web development.  I am willing to take responsibility for any damage to my laptop base on you guidance. Please give me your opinion on which hard ware is causing the problem. I already remove the screen covering and the screws on the back.

Re:Green Screen problem

Hi,

I am not actually encouraging you to do that since you are not experienced enough to dismantle the device. But if you really wish to do that, maybe you should share your complete laptop model first. Or maybe the complete machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK or 20UD000BUS) from the sticker usually located under the case.

Re:Green Screen problem

Hi,

There are a lot of Ideapad S145 variants out there.

Please share your complete machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) to help find details on the machine variant involved in this subject.

You can check this link here as a guide to find your machine type model / MTM which consist of ten characters. Please refrain from including the machine serial number (S/N) in the thread: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/videos/vid100751-how-to-locate-serial-number-and-machine-type-model-number-may-2020-update

Re:Green Screen problem

Hi,

Either the problem is with the LCD screen, the LCD cable, or the connection of the LCD cable and the port on board. You can see how you can disassemble the machine by checking on the hardware maintenance manual on support site from the bottom cover until the LCD.

Regards.
