Can I buy a longer cord for a Lenovo??

My Lenovo IdeaPad S340 came with a six foot cord, but I need a longer one. I tried buying a universal power cord with a million heads, but none of them fit into my machine. I called LEnovo customer service to order something compatable and was told that the company doesn't see anything longer than six feet, nor do they sell an appropriate head to adapt universal cords to the IdeaPad. Is there anything else out there that will fit?

Re: Can I buy a longer cord for a Lenovo??

Hi susanmm,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As most OEM, they would only be able to provide standard electropnically certified parts for OEM machines. The same goes with the proprietary connector heads so my best bet perhaps is an extension power cable with surge protector that can offer you the needed length and added protection.

Instead of buying a new adapter and figuring out the head config, simply buy a longer AC cord instead:

I agree on buying a longer power cord. Just make sure you get the one with a proper gauge to avoid melting of the wire.

I have an S340 also and my power cord is exactly 6'10" stretched out.

You do not need a heavy duty cord as the charger only draws 1.5 amps max from the AC outlet at the wall.  So you can get by with a two conductor 18 AWG wire as would be typical for two conductor extension cords.  With only 1.5 amps you could go even smaller gauge AWG wire but I don't think they make them less.  So you do not need heavy duty wire.

DO NOT get a heavy duty three conductor extension cord either.  Just get the two conductor extension cord as it will be easier to transport and put in your laptop case.

I already had a 12 foot extension cord at my house, but at a local store you might be able to get one cheaper than online.

For reference something like this:

Re: Can I buy a longer cord for a Lenovo??

g725s has the right idea: you DO NOT want a longer cord from the power cube to the computer - if it's not long enough, use an AC extension cord.

Laws of physics  - higher voltage = less loss from the wire. The longer the wire the higher the loss. That's why power companies transmission lines are very high voltage and transformers step it down close to point of energy consumption.

If the cord on the adapter isn't long enough, you want to plug the adapter into an extension cord. (You can use a heavy duty super thick even ground 3-prong cord - it still works, just overkill.

All you really need is something like this (which not only would allow you to plug in the Lenovo, but 2 more outlets to plug in other stuff):
