Question

All of a sudden, my DVD won't start and showed error message  "This device cannot start (code 10)".  I've tried to update drivers but they seem to be fine.  Any idea what the error code means?

Answer

Try both parts mentioned below.

Part A:

  1. Firstly, check the device manager whether there is yellow exclamation mark on your DVD/CD driver section. If so, try to right click to un-install it restart your system.

  2. When system restarts, the drive will be installed again automatically.

Part B:

To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers in registry. However, please take note that doing this incorrectly may cause system inoperable. Do it at your own risk.

  1. Click start start button, and type "regedit" in the start search box.
  2. Click regedit in the Programs list.
  3. Choose user account control permission if you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation.
  4. Type your user account password, or click continue .
  5. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

    hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

    Caution: there can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 5. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the upperfilters and the lowerfilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and the class data value is "CDROM".

  6. On the right pane, check if you have a key in your registry for upperfilters and lowerfilters.
  7. Delete both of these keys and reboot.
