I have an Ideapad U400. Recently the hard drive failed. I was able to determine this because after replacing the hard drive with a spare and loading up the latest copy of Ubuntu on it it works just fine. I have a universal adapter for any hard drive to USB so I took the old drive and tried to recover any data off of it that I could but the drive had some sort of hardware failure and couldnt be recovered.
The problem I am running in to now is that this laptop did not come with any software to reinstall the OS. It came with Windows 7 originally, and sure there was a recovery partition but that was on the old (non functional) hard drive. Does anyone know how I would go about getting a replacement operating system for this laptop without having to buy another copy of windows?
I have been all over the support site and am unable to find anything about how to "onekey recover" from a failed hard drive.
