Hard drive replacement for Ideapad U510, Windows 8.1

I have problem with my Ideapad U510. Taken to a shop. It could be a fan problem or could be a hard drive problem or both. My U510 has 24GB SSD + 1 TB HD (I think it is WD). The OS was Win8 which I upgraded to Win8.1 within days I received the laptop.

Have 2 questions:

Q1/  Can the hard drive swap out and replaced by a new drive? In other word, will the existence of the 24GB SSD posed a problem in this swapping?

Q2/ The HD is 1TB. Googling the spec for U510, there is an old pdf from Lenovo saying this laptop support 500GB, 750GB to 1TB HD. If the original drive is the source of problem and I have to replace it, does anyone know whether I can replace the original 1TB drive with a 2TB drive?  Also, the original HD spins at 5400rpm, can U510 accepts HD with spinning speed of 7200rpm?

Thanks in advance.

>Firstly what's the issue you are facing with your system you have not mentioned about that. And also go for clean installation of Windows 8.1 if you are replacing a new drive instead of cloning from older one

>Yes, hard drive is upgradable & the 24GB SSD (mSATA) will not pose any problem while doing as that is all together in different slot via  PCIe Mini Card slot. The sole purpose is to handle Intel Smart Response Technology

>It's hard to say whether it will support 2TB HDD's but in many sites there are 2TB replacement available for your system. And also it does support Hard drives of 7200rpm.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hard drive replacement for Ideapad U510, Windows 8.1

Prabhansh:  This is the problem with my U510.

2 days ago, when I was working on the laptop, the laptop suddenly squealed with a continuous loud noise. I think the laptop was sort of vibrating too. U510 always sit on top of a CoolerMaster U2 cooling pad. I forced the U510 to power down by holding down the power button. I powered it up again. Same disturbing loud noise (maybe vibration) persisted. I tolerated the noise and looked at device manager. Everything looked fine (i.e. no question marks next to the hard drive or any items). I took the laptop to a repair shop right away. The person said there are 2 possibilities: The harddrive or the fan (bearings or the entire fan housing). If it is the hard drive, he is not sure whether I can replace it with a 2TB HD from the current 1TB HD and I should check or ask the Lenovo site/forum. If it is a HD problem, yes, I have to reinstall the OS on a new drive. I have the original Win8, Win8.1 discs packages from Lenovo.

My new questions are:

1/ Am I correct to say you too are not sure whether I can replace the original 1TB HD (WD) with a 2TB HD even though you said you have seen sites selling 2TB replacement HD for this model?

2/ So are you recommending that if the problem with my U510 was indeed caused by HD failure, I should replace it with another 1TB drive?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hard drive replacement for Ideapad U510, Windows 8.1

Well to make it clear can you confirm from which side are you able to hear that whinning noise left or right. Or if possible you can run hardware Diagnostics aswell.

And as far as replacing the HDD is concerned Lenovo has only tested this system with 1TB hard drives but chances are there that 2TB HDD will work fine with it. But ideal will be to go for 1TB HDD only in case if it a root cause of your system's issue.

Re: Hard drive replacement for Ideapad U510, Windows 8.1

Prabhansh: Thank you. There is good news. I just came back from the computer shop. The problem is identified with the fan. They did a surface scan on the hard drive. It was perfect. They did something to the fan, clear out the dirt and lubricated the bearings or something. I have the laptop back now.

I am backing up all the data to the external hard drives over the weekend Then I will take the same laptop back to have the computer shop to look at why this laptop took 5~10 min to boot up completely. This is an old problem which Lenovo support had looked at before (but I stopped subscriping to the enterprise support after 3 years this Febuary).

Thanks again.

BTW, I just added an additional question wrt to my Thinkpad here:

Re: Hard drive replacement for Ideapad U510, Windows 8.1

Well, good to hear that atleast HDD is working fine here & regarding slow boot may be disabling some services or performing clean installation of Windows may help.
