Hard drives with Lenovo U310 Ultrabook

2012-08-01, 12:42 PM

Hello,

I just received my new IdeaPad U310 Ultrabook, which comes with two drives, one HDD of 500 GB and one SSD of 32 GB. I can see these two drives from the BIOS. But with the files explorer, there are two drives, which do no correspond to the two physical drive. One drive C: come with 420 GB and a drive D with 25 GB. The OS (Win 7) is located on the 420 GB drive, and the applications on the D drive with 25 GB. I would like to know on which drive do I have to install the new applications (Office,...) in order to optimize access time to the drive.

Somebody could post a message explaining why Lenovo has "merge" the 2 drives,. I though that the OS should be on the SSD drive and applications and data on the HDD drive. But I am very confused.

Thanks for clarifications!

Antoine

They are not merged. The 32gb msata is used as cache and thus not visible in explorer. The other 500gb disk is partitioned/split for safety purposes. Backup/installation files are probably stored on one of them. You can see the details in windows disk management.

So, just install new apps to your main drive.

Thank you very much for your prompt answer.

What I wanted is to have a SSD drive so the HDD would keep quite as well as the fan, so the laptop would be silent! it is one of my main concern in laptop.... so the HDD would start only occasionally when using some usual programs. Would it be wise to reconfigure the system and installing the OS on the SSD along with the main usual programs, and the rest on the HDD? Or better to keep as it is, but then the HDD and the very are on all the time.

Thanks for your advice.

The 32GB mSATA disk is actually a bit too smal for a windows install. You easily have 40GB diskspace used when installing Windows 7, some updates, office and some small apps. THe 32 gig will also not be fully available due to some overhead used by the ssd itself.

Your best option would be to either replace the 32gb mSATA by a 64gb/128gb one, and use the 500gb as a "dump/datadisk" (no programs)

Orrr.. you replace them both by a betetr performing 180/256gb model, which should cover basic data needs. (unless you plan on saving 30+full hd movies).

A corsair force GS 180gb costs about 175 euros. (superfast normal SSD), a 128gb crucial M4 mSata costs about 125euros (fine performance Msata).

Thank you so much for your fast answers. Is it easy to swap the 32GB by a 128 GB M4?

I have as well a W520 which is 8 month old, but it is quite noisy. I tried to play with the setup, but once the HDD heats and the fan powers on, it is quite noisy. I was thinking on buying a HD bay where I would put the 500 GB HDD that came with the machine and replace it with a 128GB SSD where I would install Win 7 and all the most used programs, and keep the HDD as dumping for games (i have kids....) movies etc... Would that work? And could I just mirror my existing HDD on the SSD?

Thanks.

I too would like to know how to upgrade the hard drive(s) in this particular model. I can't seem to find any opening as you normally would in a laptop...
