My usb opticle drive went south and I hardly ever use it so I figured this out and thought it might help someone else.
First you need a 1GB SD card or thumb drive and a usb hard drive.
Next go into your bios setup and move all usb and card slots to the top of the boot order under "Boot" menu.
Next google and download the free Macrium Refex Backup software.
Next follow these instructions. http://www.macrium.com/blog/2008/09/23/HowToCreateABootableLinuxUSBStick.aspx
Complete process with backup takes about half an hour and no high tech knowledge required.
It works great and rescue SD boots right up from the SD card slot on the front.
Make your Macrium image backups on a usb hard drive. This can be moved to a new hard drive if the old one fails and it will have an exact image of the original.
