IdeaPad S510P Touch / Failed hard drive. Need to reinstall

Few years back we bought a Lenovo IdeaPad S510P.  The hard drive failed and I had to get a new one for it.  Problem is I didn't make backup disk for the computer and I can't remember but don't think we got windows disk with it.  If we did we've misplaced them.  How do I go about getting this new hardrive formatted and the computer up and running again?  Will Lenovo allow me to download a replacement if I suppy serial number?  Will they mail me disk?  It came with windows 8.  If I do get that am I able to switch to 7 or 10 at no cost?  I'm also unclear on how this would be done.  I'm assuming if downloading I would have to make some kind of bootable thumb drive?  Any suggestions and links that would be helpful would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance

Hi rbboom,

 

Welcome to the Community Forums. 

 

WIth an active warranty  then calling technical support would definitely send you some recovery disc or bootable drive. You can also check using your serial number here if your machine qualifies for the free recovery media download.

 

If you availed of the free upgrade from Microsoft from Win 8 to Win 10 or your machine have a Windows 7 downgrade rights from the original purchase then you can switch to that version at no cost else you have to purchase a product key from Microsoft.

 

A clean WIndows 8 image is free here to download and it would automatically activate as long as you use the same version of Windows that came with your machine. Drivers are also free here on the support website.

Thanks for your reply.  I checked my serial number and the 'key' download isn't available for my computer.  I then went to the 

Windows 8 download link.  You said it would need to be the same version as I had on the computer.  Without documentation, how

would I know which version?  It also says I would need activation key from original?  I don't have that either.  And again, this is

to be installed on a replacement hard drive.  Thanks for your help.

You can send me the serial number privately for me to have it checked with the technical support guys or you can try the parts lookup page and look at the top for machine information and systemboard description on the commodity list at the bottom.

 

Usually there are Microsoft label on the laptop too or on the box if you still have it.

For : ideapad s510p touch notebook  Machine Type Model: 80BQ59401424 verified came originally with Windows 8 home 64 bit with product key embedded on the systemboard PN 90004497. Then upgrade to Windows 10 if you have availed of the free upgrade when it was offered by Microsoft.
