IdeaPad S540-15IWL GTX high-pitched noise

2020-01-06, 18:27 PM

Hi,

I purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15IWL GTX a couple of days ago and it seems like the fan produces a very anoying high-pitched noise, even under relatively light workloads. Is this fixable? According to Google I'm not the only person facing this issue. I've been greatly enjoying this machine so far, however the high-pitched noise is a deal breaker for me. I'm therefore thinking of returning the product if this issue cannot be solved.  I've got the latest drivers installed.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the fan? This sounds like GPU coil whine.

There's indeed a good chance that you're correct. I didn't even know this issue existed among GPU's. All I noticed is that when the fan speed increased the hissing/squealing noise became louder as well. Apparently it's next to impossble to fix. It is really unfortunate because the device is great in every other way.

Hello

I was thinking of buying this model but only when this issue is resolved. Do you know if it has yet? If not, maybe lenovo can advise in this thread whether there is a fix planned?

Thanks in advance

I've just bought one, and the high pitched noise started shortly after the fan started to work harder, so that may mean it's a fan problem more likely than coil whine. I had to close the game I was playing, as it was so loud, even turning the volume on the speakers up to max didn't drone it out. The moment the laptop cooled down, the noise subsided and is now completely stopped. It is really painful to the ears, so if it's not fixable, it goes back to the shop, and I will get another laptop. Shame, as so far I'm very happy with the overall performance and the screen.

As long as this issue is not fixed, I'd strongly recommend against buying one, but once the issue is fixed this laptop will be very nice indeed!

Same here. The notebook seems perfect for the price, but the sound is really annoying! Please, can some Lenovo employee give a statement here. Can it be fixed via software update?

This should be completely fixable with a software update considering the system typically doesn't overheat or have high temperatures. Someone at Lenovo should hear our complaints and fix this issue. They could have an update which improves the quiet mode function drastically and offers more options to limit the CPU power, GPU power, etc. Just any solution which would make the system quieter when browsing the web/doing low power tasks.

I think they made some mistakes when developing the software which controls the fan speeds based on temperature, they should be able to fix it with software updates, but we have to make it known to them that this is a problem. Also, the Switchable Graphics option in the BIOS does not actually work when using the HDMI port.
