Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

2009-11-12, 9:54 AM

First, sorry for my bad English! I've bought last week an Ideapad U350 because it looks very nice and the mix of Netbook and Subnotebook is actualy the best way for me.

But now i have a really big problem. After 10 - 15min of working ( Internet, ICQ, Word ) in Windows Vista oder Seven the fan turns on and goes never off. I think that the APIC Controller set to ~ 40 - 45 ° Core Temp to switch on the fan(fullspeed = very loud). After 5 min the Fan is turned on my Ideapad is cold in the Bottomcase but the FAN dont switch off. I think this could not be correct because the cpu temperature is in a normal level.   A fan should switch on between 50 - 55 ° to cool down the CPU to ~ 40 ° and then switch off.

I hope Lenovo fix this issus asap. Maybe with an Bios Update or Fan Control Software/ Energy Management?? Am i the only one with this Problem ??

Greets

Sebastian

I completely agree as I have the same problem. On my machine the fan turns on at 45 and turns off at 39. Threshold should be at around 55 degrees for ON. This ON/OFF behaviour is really annoying.

Hi xloserx,

i've read all your postings in the other threads. It seems we are the only one with this Problem or we are the only one who bought a U350 :-). Maybe someone from Lenovo can confirm this "Bug" and give us a statement....

I sent Mark a link to my thread in this forum about excessive fan noise, and he said this: "We have one in the lab I'll take a look at.  I've not gotten to spend time with it yet..."

So maybe they eventually will do something in the BIOS.

In the meantime it kinda "works" with NHC and the script made for the S10. All you have to do is change 0x51 with 0x58. This results in the fan going off for three seconds, then comming on for half a second, then off for three - and so on. At least you will not have to listen to all the noise, but it's kinda annoying this NHC-ON/OFF thing also. :p

BIOS update please?! 5 degrees between ON and OFF fan thresholds is way to little! There should be at least 15 degrees! I prefer a little "heat" over noise, and I'm quite surprised that Lenovo still thinks that a cool machine is what we consumers think is most important. Today we bring our machines with us wherever we go, and having a noisy machine makes us embarassed in company of other people with machines that doesn't make much noise - or at all.

I've sold my U350 and bought a used Dell XPS M1330. No reply from Lenovo was for me not acceptable..

Perhaps I will have to sell mine as well then. But I like the looks of this machine, so I'll be sitting on my hands for a little while longer - hoping that Lenovo will come to their senses and FIX this.

I'm also getting a lot of fan noise from my U350. Seems like the temperature of the machine is fairly low, but with fan on full speed the noise is relatively high.

Has anyone had luck tuning either the fan speed, or the temperature at which the fan kicks on?

Cheers,

@sagemintblue

Read my previous post in this thread about NHC and a script made for the S10. It's not a good solution, but

the only solution I have come across this far.

For more information about how NHC and this script works, you can read about it in this thread:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/User-developed-Fan-Control-for-the-S10-e/td-p/119319

The 3 seconds off/half a second on cycling is also an annoyance, but not quite as annoying as the usual hairdryer-noise. Strange thing about this is that the temperature seldom surpasses 55 degrees C, which by noe means could be said as being hot. And still Lenovo has set the temp threshold for the fan to kick in at 45 degrees, which is way too low - especially when the lowest fan speed is quite noisy.

I'm x-ing my fingers hoping that Lenovo will come with a BIOS update where they have upped the thresholds.

Hi xlosers,

How to change 0x51 to 0x58? I could not find it any where.
