Re: Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

2011-01-06, 22:26 PM

First of all, a big THANK YOU  middleton for your effords!

I own a U350 for a week, with a SU7300 (probably not many have it with this cpu). I tried the last BIOS, but untill 65C the fan seemed to be or off, or really low, and then it kicked with full speed... With that conditions, the left palmrest was always hot, and I believe that Greek summers with 40C will be a problem with that temperatures... (My original bios had no fan until 45C, and then the fan was really annoying until 40C. When 40C was reached, it turned off again)...

But then I tried a previous BIOS that has been posted from middleton (6th page, the one that initially npapas said that tried), and with my configuration, it works better in my opinion! The fan is always on, but really low in noise, so low that can be described as "inaudible". It idles at ~43C now (room at ~22C), and fan kicks in at 50C...

Assuming that I'm not able to make my own preferable values in a new BIOS, I'll keep this one... So I'm just telling my experience, so future readers with the SU7300 might try that one also.

Y460/Y560 BIOS can be patched by the same way as U350. But I've never heard of any problems with Y560 fan.

Send me a private message if you wish to go on because Y560 is off topic in this thread.

I provided all needed information for adjusting fan speed the way you want by yourself. It can be found in this post.

Sorry I don't have much time to tune up the fan for every U350 owner.

Yes, I understand and I thank you very much for you solve a problem that Lenovo could not - or did not want to fix it ..................... if you know how many ways I tried to lower cooler speed. ...... I put the cooler in series with a transistor ...ha.....
But ,thanks to you, I solved .........
Cooler is very quiet now ..... only problem is when the CPU reaches 65 degrees
when I playing ,cooler start  at full speed which is annoying for others, especially at night ..... so I want to change speed cooler half. Just do not know what program to use to change the tables ....... if you want to show me, please, in short steps how to do ......( of course if your time permits .. ) I'd be very happy if I solve this problem with my laptop U350 --- which in principle is a good laptop ---
Whether or not you find time to explain to me (and others) to change the speed
cooler as I want , thank you on behalf of myself and other owners of the U350 that have given us the opportunity to have a silent laptop.
    Good for you! Thanks.

I gave all offsets in BIOS file and described the format of the fan speed tables. If you are familiar with hex-editing software, then you can easily adjust your fan speeds.
But as I can see you don't have an experience in hex-editing. OK, I'll make an exclusion for you - send me a private message on this forum.

Just a suggestion, as you said before there were 4-5 different versions (of BIOSes with different fan speeds tables) that were tested, to conclude to last one finally posted (with fan only starting aggressively at 65C). Why not posting all of them and let people decide which one suits better their hardware / needs? As I said for my U350 (with SU7300) I didn't keep the last (final) one, but a previous one that is given in 6th page of this topic... :smileywink:

Re: Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

Hi middleton,

thanks also from my side - I have been happy with the U350 so far compared to some other Laptops, but now with that BIOS-change and I did related to your explanation already my own tweaking in the FAN-Speed-Table, I love the U350 even more. Also I had a problem with my USB-Docking-Station (not from Lenovo) after reboot I needed to unplug it till the HD-Passwd has to be entered. Now with your BIOS-Change, disabled Wireless-Whitelist, also this problem is gone.

!!! Perfect -Job !!!

How did you figure out the positions to change in the BIOS - do you have some kind of documentation for it?

I'm interested to do my own changes further on as well, can you post some info about it?

Thanks in advance!
