Re: Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

2011-01-10, 12:46 PM

All needed documentation and datasheets are available to notebook manufacturers only. You can't find it in public access.

As for me: I'm not a BIOS guru - firmware modding is just my hobby. I knew nothing about modifying BIOS code two years ago. It all started when I bought a Toshiba laptop which had an annoying fan behavior ON/OFF/ON/OFF etc. It drove me crazy. I set to myself a goal to fix it but faced with a complete lack of information concerning the problem.

So I was forced to get all the information by myself only. It took about a year because I was busy on my main work and didn't have much time to learn BIOS modding. As you can see it's possible to become a BIOS modder from scratch. But you have to get used to obtain information yourself because BIOS vendors or notebook manufacturers will never provide you datasheets and needed tools.

Middleton thank you very much!

Just like you, I struggled about half a year to find a solution for the annoying noise produced by the cooler.

Now, because of you, I enjoy a good laptop and quiet ....

Thank you again!

Re: Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

Hello to everybody in this forum/ thread.

I bought a u350 a few weeks ago, but only with the one option in mind:

Change to middletons modded bios and enjoy the ideapad.

If i didn´t read this thread before and knew of the modded bios, I wouldn´t have bought it!

I love silent notebooks, so i´ve had a few and sold them, because they were too loud.

So at this point thanks again to middleton and his fantastic job!!!

I also edited the fan table to my needs, so that the fan doesn´t kick in at full speed at last/highest stage.

But I think, the fan temp table (I agree that it must be the third one) is way to secure and I thought of this mod:

To get the other temperature values, copy one of the other temp tables to the place on position three.

Now the big question ( I hope middleton will read this ;-)  ):

Will this work, cause I think the fan mustn´t run just when you surf or do some text...

OK, the temps will rise, but everybody knows, what temps are not ok for the hardware, so 40°C are way to cool in my opinion.

Other notebooks I got ran at approx. 55 to 65 and everything was fine (because they were silent!).

Thanks for your answers.

PS: middleton, please tell me how to find these fan values in other bios´es.

So I´d like to investigate an Hannspreee 12" which fan has the same problem as the u350.

First silent, then starts fan and never stops, grrrrrrrrr....

written on a nearly silent u350, thank you again.

I don't have an U350. So I don't know how temperature table changes will affect the fan behavior. Try it and inform us about results :smileyhappy:

If you want to find fan control code in other BIOS-es, then you have to disassemble and analyze firmware. It's the only way.

Middleton, could your bios mod affect ACPI compatibility under Linux?  I've installed your bios to fix the fan noise issue (thank you for making it, a great help), but now I can only run my machine (Ubuntu 10.10) with the acpi=off option, which is not ideal on a laptop.

This has only been a problem since upgrading to 10.10.  I'm a novice in this area, but I have managed to extract the DSDT table and recompile it and it shows no errors.

I didn't change any ACPI tables, just modified fan speeds.

Have you tried the official BIOS from Lenovo's web site? Maybe it's a bug of this BIOS version.

Anyway I can't solve your issue.

Hi. Where can I find these tables to modify them? I mean I`ve got Phoenix Bios Editor to open 1CCN26WW.WPH but I can not find those tables. Thank you.

I described everything in this post.

You don't need any BIOS Editors. All you need is a hex editor.

Your modified BIOS update saved me from having to purchase a replacement laptop for my wife who likes to use her U350 at night in bed....keeping me awake.  Thank you for your service to the community.

Shame on Lenovo for ignoring the noise problem.  This will be my last purchase from this company.
