Re: Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

2011-05-22, 9:36 AM

Thanks a lot Middleton for your great modded bios and explanation, and sorry for my bad english (I'm Japanese).

I'm satisfied with your fix. My U350 (SU2300)  was really reborn.

At now I want to understand this FAN control mechanism more precisely, and drew a picture of speed table bellow.

As you can see, table1 and table2 seems to be continuous (i.e. table2's 2nd follows table1's 6th).

But I thought that you assume the speed table1 has no connection with table2, and used by different CPU model, right ?

(Because by your fix, table 1 and 2  is uncontinuous)

Tha's an unclear point now. I hope you get my point.

Thanks.

Exactly.

If so, table1 seems to be strange. (Of course It's not your fault, but original table is strange)

I can't understand why last entry (8% per 1cycle) is weaker than previous entry (95% per 2cycle).

But, it's OK. table1 may be obsolete or something.

I'm not 100% sure that bytes in speed tables encode frequency divider and duty-cycle as I described.

It's just logical assumption. Maybe everything is much simpler and each two bytes are one number - the bigger the number the less fan speed:

FFFF > 2CE > 28D > 246 > 20E > 1EA.

Thanks for your explanation.

I see. It's more reasonable story.

So, it's possible that your fix value 040E doesn't  mean 12% per 4 cycle.

Maybe, I should try various values and hear noise to understand the mechanism.

Thank you.

Re: Ideapad U350 Fan Control / Speed

hey,

i read the wohle thread about the fan speed. i downloaded the pimped bios from middleton an flashed my old bios with that. it works perfect. i used the version which doesnt contain the change with the CTRL and FN buttons. it was on page 6.

but i dont understand how to change the fan i wanna have it. middleton wrote on page 9 a manual how to change with the exact things and so on. but i never worked before with an hex editor. i downloaded one, but for me there are only numbers and numbers and numbers..... sry.... can someone help me out and explain how i can change it or you can change the bios like i wanna have it?

i think it disturbed a bit, when the fan always is working like it is now in your bios.

so i wanna change it like this way, that the fan is not working under 50 degrees. above 50 degrees to 55 degrees the fan should work like its working now, nearly audible, and over 55 degrees a bit more speed. that could be a bit more audible....

why these changes? because i need my computer only for typing and surfing in the libary. so no hard working for the cpu....

can someone help me out with that or can you discribe how i can change it?

thanks 3rt

HP dv6 notebooks have poorly designed cooling system. So I don't recommend decreasing fan speeds.
Besides, at the moment I don't have time to modify HP BIOS.
