Ideapad U410 FN + F4 is not working

2014-05-01, 11:36 AM

I'm sorry if it's a repost.

So, I have this Lenovo Ideapad U410 with Windows 8.1 installed. My sister also has an Ideapad which I don't remember what model she has. On my sister's laptop, which is preinstalled with Windows 8, got the FN + F4 and FN + F5 working which is to close a program and refresh a webpage. But mine, preinstalled with FreeDOS, is not working. I already tried the BIOS update but it only fixed the Novo Button.

Any suggestions? I really don't know what to do.

hi Muraziii,

I'm afraid you will not be able to change on how the "X" foreground button functions when this is disabled in the BIOS. I'm not sure why this is disabled on your Ideapad U410 but I'm thinking that they've most likely changed how this key works as other users found this button "more of a hindrance than a help" in this article.

Regards

hi Muraziii,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, when you press the F4 key, does the current active window or program closes?

If pressing F4 closes out the current Window or program then you most likely have hotkey mode enabled.

Can you try to:

1. Boot into the BIOS via the UEFI Firmware Settings

2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Configuration Tab and set Hotkey Switch to Legacy.Mode.

  - Link to picture

When done, press F10 (or Fn+F10) to save and exit then observe if you can now press Fn+F4 to close the current active Window / Program in Windows.

Regards

Thanks for the reply,

I use the hotkey mode, every single keys is working except the F4 which is to close program. I tried the legacy mode, it's not working as well (FN + F4 is detected as F4).

hi Muraziii,

Thanks for posting back your findings.

When hotkey mode is enabled in the BIOS and you press Alt+F4, are you able to close the active window or program? If this works then the "X" foreground button to close the active window or program is most likely disabled in the BIOS.

Yep, when hotkey mode is enabled, ALT+F4 can close the active window. If the "X" foreground button disabled from BIOS, can I enable it? or can I do something about it?

"more of a hindrance than a help" huh. I guess I get it. Even I can't turn it on, I guess this is helping me. Thanks!
