Is the fan problem solved ?

2009-05-28, 3:37 AM

I'm about to buy a lenovo s10 (not s10-2) from lenovo website, is the fan noise problem solved in the new batches ordered from lenovo ? is the problem fixed with a new bios or what ?

btw, how long does the 3-battery and 6-battery units lasts in real-world applications (browsing the web with wi-fi, for instance).

About the s10-2, it's more expensive than the original s10, and it doesn't seem better to me...

No, the fan problem is not solved in any form by Lenovo.

My point is, I don't wanna buy a netbook and have to use a third-party program to control the bad-designed fan behavior... If the new batches haven't fixed the program, I'm gonna buy a asus eepc instead... I love lenovo (and thinkpads) but if lenovo can't fix a fan problem in their idepad series i'm gonna look somewhere else....

duwde:

If you use mr. Google you will find that most of the netbooks out there have third party programs to control fan behaviour. So I think that whatever netbook you go for, you will have to use such.

I don't agree with you... one thing is to have a program to manage your fan at your own desire, it's very different to be FORCED to use a proram to FIX a badly designed fan that should be correctly controlled without anything at all.

Is there any problem with asus eeepc's fan ? Not that I know of...

For the Eee they have the eeectl - a fan controlling program.

I have an S10e, and with the 66 bios the netbook doesn't make much noise at all - "only" during video playback does the fan come on, but seldom on higher speed than #1. But _I_ prefer it to not make _any_ noise at all - that's why I use a third-party program. I think it's mostly based on personal preferences, but of course, some machines can be faulty.

Re: Is the fan problem solved ?

Hi duwde.

Only a partial answer from me I'm afraid as in the UK we get the S10e not the S10 (boo.... I wanted the S10's screen)

The build date on mine was Nov 08 even though I only got it yesterday.

The fan is fine IMHO , yes it comes on a bit & you can hear it, but its a long way from being intrusive, it is quieter than the fan on my ThinkPad Z61m

My tuppence worth ?.......... I think there may have been a batch of faulty fans which should have gone by now.

Buy it, its a great little machine I'm realy impressed with mine build quality is way better than any of the other makes I looked at (and I looked at everything I could find) & it is with the exeption of the pricier Samsung or HP2140 the only one that does not look like a kids toy. if you do find a fan problem (unlikely), that's what a warrany is for or just send it back for refund or replacement from your vendor.

Battery seems to go a little over 3 hours ( 3 cell) wifi on in back garden ,poor signal from router in the house, web browsing & typing this. Power set to ballanced. Started up 8:30 am just got a forced hybernate from low power 3% at 11:05.

Hope this helps

Regards Tony
