Lenovo S145-14API Upgrade problems

2020-06-24, 14:43 PM

So I've been wanting to upgrade my laptop for quite sometime, and I need help since I'm not a techie.

RAM:

I already have a 4gb + 4gb (soldered)  RAM and I want to upgrade to the highest possible RAM size. I think it's 16gb. If I installed the 16gb RAM, would I run into complications? I've read somewhere that the RAM needs to be matched otherwise the excess RAM would just go into waste and not be used.

SSD:

S145-14API have a 2.5 HDD slot. I already have an SSD installed. Would there be problems if I installed another SSD with 2.5" form factor?

An in-depth replay would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi parcsanity,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

General specs for the ideapad S145-14API Platform:

12GB max / 2400MHz DDR4, 4GB memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM socket

Up to 2 drives (one HDD and one M.2 SSD):

● HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, 5400rpm

● M.2 2242 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 2, 16Gb/s

● M.2 2280 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/s

We can be in- depth on the options if you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

We would know what is available in the board and get options on what upgrade are possible specially if you have not physically checked it.

Update us soon as convenient.

Regards

Welcome to the forum.

RAM:

You can replace the 4GB module with either an 8GB or 16GB 2400MHz DDR4 module. The speed can be higher than 2400MHz but it won't run any faster. Matched (dual channel) RAM will run slightly faster than unmatched. The difference will be imperceptible to most users.

SSD:

I assume your current SSD is installed in the M.2 slot. You can add a second SSD in the 2.5" SATA slot. Note however that it won't run as fast as an M.2 drive.

If I were to upgrade to a 16gb 2400MHz DDR4, would that mean that the laptop would run on 2 (1 4gb and 1 16gb) single channel?

SSD:

Thanks for the insight on this. I think I'll be going for a high-capacity HDD instead.

In addition, could I also have the soldered RAM removed and replace it with a bigger RAM?

Yes. Nevertheless, assuming your system needs more than 8GB, an increase in RAM to 12GB or 20GB will likely improve system performance by far more than the difference between single and dual channel.

Thanks for the insight on this. I think I'll be going for a high-capacity HDD instead.

If you're looking to extend data storage, e.g. to store media, then an HDD is fine. If you need speed, e.g. to do database operations, then an SSD will make the system run much faster.

could I also have the soldered RAM removed and replace it with a bigger RAM?

It's generally not practical. If the objective is to maintain dual channel then the risk of damaging the system board far exceeds any benefit.

I very recommended upgrade ram only with DDR 3200. Zen+ support 2933 with soldered RAM.
