Lenovo S20 Touch USB ports not working properly - please help

Hi All,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I'd really appreciate some help from anyone with getting the USB ports on my Lenovo S20 Touch  to work properly.

My ipod can connect to my USB ports and the laptop will instantly recognise it and it will show up.  However, whenever I try connecting my digital camera to the laptop via any of the USB ports, it doesn't acknowledge that anything is connected and there's no way for me to load it up.

I'd really apprecaiate some help with this asap as I need to transfer some photos from the camera onto my laptop fairly urgently.

Thanks very much for looking and for your help.

Cheers

Steve

Re: Lenovo S20 Touch USB ports not working properly - please help

Hello Stevek8

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Sounds like there will be an issue with the camera and not the unit itself.

If other units are recognised when connected to the unit, then this would indicate an issue with your camera setup.

Refer to the userguide/manual of the camera, that should have a section on it that would walk you through setting up the camera with your PC.

Are you able to see if the camera is able to be recognised in other units?

Also, Try to download the Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.

Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Lenovo S20 Touch USB ports not working properly - please help

Hi Krakken,

Thanks very much for your helpful reply.

I forgot to mention that the camera was connecting fine up until a few days ago, but when I tried it the other day, the laptop doesn't even acknowledge that anything's just been connected.

I've looked at the camera's manual but it just says to connect it like I did before, but now it won't work.  I've downloaded the chipset drivers thanks, but unfortunately it hasn't made any difference.

Unfortunately I'm unable to try connecting the camera to any other units, but I've just tried connecting my printer to the laptop and whereas that was also working last week, that now isn't being recognised either.  This leads me to believe that the problem is with the laptop?  I've tried both USB ports and it still won't recognise either device.

Is there any reason why it would suddenly stop recognising them, but that it still recognises my ipod?  Do you have any other suggestions as to what to try?

Thanks very much again for your help.

Re: Lenovo S20 Touch USB ports not working properly - please help

Sorry about the late reply.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Hi Krakken,

Thanks for your reply and please don't worry about the delay.

I've done what you said, but unfortunately it hasn't made any difference and my laptop still isn't recognising the camera, even though the camera has a red light on it, meaning that it's connected to the laptop.

Please let me know what you advise.

Thanks very much for your help.

Cheers

Re: Lenovo S20 Touch USB ports not working properly - please help

Hi,

Did you happen to try taking the SD card out of the camera and slipping it in the laptop's card reader slot?

What operating system are you running in your machine?

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for your helpful response and apologies for the delay in getting back to you but I've been away recently.

Thanks for your advice on entering the SD card into the laptop's card reader slot and I have now done this and have fortunately been able to access the photos that I needed to via this method.  However. the laptop still isn't recognising the camera when I try plugging it in via the usb cable so do you know why this is?

I'm running Windows 8.1, do you think that this may be the problem?

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi Steve,

Do other devices connect properly to the USB, such as a mouse or a keyboard or a flashdrive?

Try connecting the printer and the camera to USB and going into your device manager.  At the top, click view, choose show hidden devices, and see if anything in there has a yellow tag on it.  If it does, click on it and see what the error is.

Edit to add:  You could also go into Devices and Printers and see if your camera and printer show up there.  See if your printer is chosen as default and see if there are any errors with the devices in there.

I have had Windows Update install updated drivers for printers and render them inoperable.  Are you just using a simple driver for printing or are you using a software package for your printer that has scanning abilities and everything else?  You might have to uninstall the printer software and reinstall it if Windows installed a new driver for it.  As for the camera, I never had WindowsUpdate make a camera not work.  I would normally recommend changing the cable, but seeing as how the camera and printer are both messed up, that might not work.

Re: Lenovo S20 Touch USB ports not working properly - please help

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much again for your helpful response and I'm really sorry for the delay in replying again.

The good news is that I tried connecting my printer again and for some reason, it's now working fine.  I still don't really know what the problem was and why it's suddenly working again but perhaps the static discharge has fixed it.  Can you think of any other reason why it would suddenly be working again?

I've also been able to connect my ipod to my laptop via the USB port and that's working fine as well.  This leads me to believe that as the camera is the only thing which isn't connecting, then as Krakken originally said, the problem must lie with the camera itself.

Thanks very much again for your help.
