Lenovo S405 Video Driver Crashes

2014-01-19, 16:49 PM

Hi I've a Lenovo S405 driver and I updated to Windows 8.1 and troubles started with the driver.

1. First the Bright screen issue which I resolved after updating the driver and the BIOS. Works well now

2. All video players kept crashing as soon as I tried to play. This was resolved after I removed the "Video transcoding/acceleration" driver. Don't remember the exact name, but as soon as I unchecked that from custom options to uninstall. Viola problem resolved.

3. But with the updated driver came AMD Catalyst all the time crashing, Which still does foolishly. Lenovo please fix this. How can you not know how to?

Re: Lenovo S405 Video Driver Crashes

As an update to this post from another Lenovo Ideapad S405 user, I've attempted to upgrade to Windows 8.1 over the past few months and find the bugs within the drivers and software infuriating. I had the brightness issue which was fixable as mentioned above with the BIOS and driver update, however Catalyst would begin crashing soon afterwards to the point where it would effect not only the brightness settings but also Windows Photo Viewer and the Windows Music App (Windows Metro).  I reverted to Windows 8 and and staying here until it is fix; but I would like to eventually upgrade to Windows 8.1 without all these hastles. Any idea when we will be seeing more updates?

Thanks MasterXavier!

I'm so surprised and shocked that Lenovo doesn't give 2 hoots about this! Well I'm certianly not buying another Lenovo product. They are concentrating their efforts more on mobiles than laptops nowadays.

UPDATE: - I uninstalled all drivers on Win 8.1 and started fresh. Same problem about crashing, Windows applications are unusable like when seeing a video! So I only uninstalled the display driver component in Custom uninstall and everything works EXCEPT the brightness setting. CAUTION/WARNING - set ur display to mid brighness level before you uninstall as that is the last setting the laptop will set to after you uninstall the display driver.

Adding to the experience...

- I don't want to revert back to Win8, so sticking with this.

- What I've done is installed all drivers EXCEPT the display driver option (when u install as Custom), 2 things happen due to this:

A. No video or windows viewer will crash, everything works super fine

B. The brightness still will not work, it works only after one installs the display driver component.

So where is the problem?

Certainly not with Windows, not with AMD but Lenovo's implementation of it! Bad job Lenovo.

It's been almost 1/2 a year with no resolution.....Lenovo will be removed from my future purchases if they do not fix this update to 8.1 shortly!!!!!  It is NOT a microsoft or AMD problem. IT IS LENOVO'S PROBLEM TO FIX!!!!

nikrusty, masterxavier,

Please don't conclude that Lenovo doesn't care.  This is a peer to peer discussion forum which means that the purpose is for customers to share their experiences and help one another.  We try to get involved in the larger issues when it is clear there is a common problem experienced by multiple customers.

So far, you two are confirming an issue with the catalyst control panel after upgrading to 8.1 ?

Could you please each confirm the version of the video driver, BIOS and catalyst control you have installed.  If you both have identifical configurations, it will help us to test and try to reproduce the issue and then find a solution.

Thanks!

Mark

Re: Lenovo S405 Video Driver Crashes

Greetings,

After attempting to update to Windows 8.1, I was unable to adjust the very dim display. Under direction of Lenovo staff I was directed to recover the computer, thus being forced to reinstall the many programs I use daily. Although I try to backup my files, I did lose some permanently.

When I bring my car into a mechanic, I do not get asked for the size of my brake pad, which cylinder fires first, and other such details that a non-mechanic would not know...

Therefore, asking me to state the bios, display and catalyst version numbers is quite similar.

I think I am running Bios version 8.01 (6enc91ww)

The video driver is 8.982.7.1000,

I have no idea what the catalyst control version is...

There are programs that require Windows 8.1 that I would like to run. Can the s405 be updated to 8.1 and run properly?

Re: Lenovo S405 Video Driver Crashes

Greetings,

I attempted to update my Ideapad S405 at the end of October, 2013 and had the stated difficulty. I received telephone support from Lenovo to recover my system. The warranty has since expired. Now, I can receive no telephone support without agreeing to pay, despite the fact that the issues appeared  and were reported and documented during the warranty period. Therefore, I am forced to try to rectify the problems via the forum route.

My question to you, Mark Hopkins, is this  how a company like Lenovo demonstrates that it cares??????

Re: Lenovo S405 Video Driver Crashes

Hi Mark,

Thanks for contacting. Sorry I was out of town so couldn't reply sooner. U see I've updated all drivers and yet the issue is there. I really don't know what to do now.

So here is what you requested...

BIOS version - 6ecn95ww.exe, version 8.05 (25 Aug 2013)

Display and Video Graphics - avga139w81a.exe, version 8.982.7.1 (11 Nov 2013)

Any video I tried to play through VLC or MEdia player classic crashed at the start itself. No Online Youtube videos played either. Flash kept crashing. So basically I've removed the following through custom uninstall....

- AMD Display Driver, 8.982.7.1000 (This I believe controls the brighness)

- AMD Quickstream 3.3.26.0

- AMD Vision Engine 2012.0911.303.3447

With the above or anyother version of display driver, videos keep crashing. So I've to choose between videos playing and brightness. I chose the former obviously.

AND this is not the only issue, Wi-Fi Keeps coming and going inspite of me sitting right next to the router. "Limited connection", the problem is not the router as My Android phone and tablet are connected to these at the same time and they have no issue.

Wifi driver - 1cwl03w8.exe, 5.0.2.0/6.30.59.26/10.0.0.209 (09 Dec 2012)

So no update?

I've rolled back to windows 8.0 because Lenovo cannot provide a fix. Why won't they they just pick up one of these S405 models and upgrade to 8.1 to see what we have to deal with.

Will never recommend Lenovo again.

me too.

my computer was normal until i upgraded my windows8 to 8.1

after i do that, i have some problems.

my light control doesn't work... but it doesn't matter much because i can see my screen anyway..

but a important crash happens for my graphic driver...

i installed every versions of display adaptor(catalyst) every time. but it says it doesn't work.. every time!

i downgraded to windows8 but the problem persists.

so i upgraded again, not working yet.

i spend all my 2 days but nothing changed without all my computer settings disappear because of changed OS.

i'm really dissapointed about these problems.
