Lenovo U410 GeForce 610m Not Increasing Clocks Under Load

2012-10-02, 9:55 AM

Just as the title suggests, the GPU in my U410 is not increasing its clocks under load. While playing games like Counter Strike: GO, the load is roughly 95% and the clocks stay at 270/405 for core/memory. Under these conditions, the temp never exceeds 60C as well. Why does this happen? I am 100% sure that the clocks can and will increase because I was able to play games fine before, but this happens intermittently. I recently updated the drivers, but this has happened since I first bought this laptop. Before I would just keep restarting the game until it is finally playable, but I cannot stand doing this anymore since it may take 10 restarts to play well, or it may take 2. Sometimes I get lucky, but I don't want to be "lucky." I want to get this fixed! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Doesn't matter really, you better disable the nvidia card in the bios as the gt610m is slower than the Intel HD4000 graphics. And it consumes more power. You do have to tinker with the Intel graphics console to maximize performance profiles. By default it's battery efficient even on powercord.

The Gt610m is just a marketing gimmick so they can trick customers into thinking they get better performance because of a dedicated GPU.

I have already tried disabling the GPU and I cannot get comparable performance in any of the games I play when the 610m actually works (Some games are playable, but some are not. ie. Borderlands 2). Sure, it takes up a bit more power, but usually when that happens I am plugged into a power source and this doesn't matter too much and I will probably never play a game unless I am connected to a power source. I would like to fix this problem, but I guess if no one has a fix, I will probably end up disabling the GPU. At least the IGP doesn't have a problem with clocking up.

EDIT: Actually just tried running Borderlands 2 on IGP and it is playable, but sometimes the FPS drops to 9 when I move the crosshair too fast...

Try changing the "Power Management Mode" to "Prefer Maximum Performance" from Nvidia Control Panel.

If it still doesn't give you full clock speed then try changing PCI Express>Link State Power Management to "Off" from Control Panel>Power Options>Advanced

It works with my GeForce 610M and seems to be more stable when i use those settings with the latest driver (306.97), without changing those settings i often gets problem such as: BSOD(VIDEO SCHEDULER error code 0x00000119) or screwed up polygons, and sometimes i saw a message like "nvidia kernel driver was stop responding and successfully restored" in the system tray (when playing games in windowed mode), and when this message showed up the GPU/Mem/Shader clocks will remains in base clock and won't clocks up until i exit the game and start over.

i wonder if the PCIE power management didn't give enough power to the nvidia GPU so it can't works properly and shows those symptoms, or may be it's driver bug in 306.97, because i heard using 310.70beta also reduce those symptoms from occurring (i haven't tested the latest beta yet)

I suggest you all to disable the swtiching Intel hd4000 and nVidia 610M because the latter is worse than Intel HD4000 in almost every task. So just disable it in BIOS and by the way disable the Lenovo Smart Update too, it comsumes a lot power for nothing (at least in my needs)

Did you not read my second post? The games I mainly play perform better with the NVidia 610M as I have tested. So it doesn't matter if the 610M is out-performed by the integrated graphics when it is ONLY slower in games that I don't even play.

Thank you for your suggestion though.

There are many games that are optimized for geforce that's why it runs faster.

I recommend using driver version 310.70beta because it's alot more stable compared to 306.97whql :)

However, you will still need to change the Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance from Nvidia Control Panel if you want the GPU to run at full speed (i was testing it for a while now), when there are no application using the GPU it will be automatically downclocked again to preserve power and reduce heat.

Running a game on geforce with dynamic clocks will makes it looks slower than IGP ;)

Ηi! I have the exact same problem with my z580 and 635m. A lot of times when I am running a game the core clock stays at 275Mhz and doesn't increase to 650Mhz as it should. Also the cpu i5-3210 stays at 1125Mhz.I have the latest nvidia drivers and intel hd 4000 drivers. The power management done with lenovo's program and it is set to maximum performance.

Is it a driver  problem or something wrong with the Laptop?
