Thanks for those links! I was able to get Ubuntu on a USB flash drive and it booted, but after it showed that Ubuntu flash screen, I selected various options, but it wouldn't run.  I am going to try it all again but using a different brand of USB drive.  


Have you any other advice on getting Ubuntu to run off a USB drive on an S10?

Exactly what do you mean when you said "it wouldn't run"? Is there an error message of any sort? If it gets stuck at the screen with the orange progress bar, try pressing alt+F2 to see what it's actually doing.


You could also try instructions from other sources, such as this one from pendrivelinux.com:




The instructions listed under "Create Ubuntu 8.10 flash drive automatically" should be quite easy to follow as everything is done in a script.
