Re: Lenovo U problems connecting to wireless network

2012-07-19, 19:58 PM

My problem with u410 is the signal is too weak ... Planning to change the internal wireless card to higher end one, but it is very troublesome to open the casing. At the end I'm using wifi adapter to replace the lenovo's one. Hope this help..

Changing the internal card wont help, as people with different cards have the same problems (you can find many experiences in the topic mentioned above). Opening the case however, is very easy (3 screws + unclick the bottom).

I'm having the same problem opening it, but I have a U310. There are 4 screws on the bottom, and how did you unclick it? Thanks

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on WiFi

Hello! I think it is not a software problem. I see exactly the same problems in various linux distributions with 2.6.*, 3.0.*, 3.2.* amd 3.4.* kernels. Best result i've got is ~3Mbps with nohwcrypt/11n_disable options and disabled power saving. But it is not very good workaround :(
So i have another question. Can I just replace wireless card with another one by myself? For example, with Intel 5100 or Broadcom BCM4322? Is there vendor blacklists in BIOS or other things which makes this chips incompatible with U310?
Will I lost warranty after upgrade? I have Thinkpad T61 and T510 and it is very simple to change HDD/RAM/WiFi in that notebooks.
Thank you!

Sorry for my English.

Hi!

I doubt the problem is the WiFi-card itself, as there are three different brands installed in the U310/U410-Series (Intel, Broadcom and Atheros) and all three show the same behaviour. An interesting point is your disabling powersaving. I could improve WiFi-performance significantly (still not satisfying) by installing the lastest Windows drivers for my Atheros-chip, but it disabled its powersaving functionality.

So I guess it's a bios issue or one related to the mainboard (hopefully not)

I'm really curios how this story continues...

I agree. The very fact that the WiFi-connection works pretty much fine, but only on condition that you are placing yourself and your U310/U410 next to your router, indicates a problem with the antenna.

However it doesn't seem to be a problem with every single unit. I haven't gotten mine myself, but I've not seen any online review site that came across this problem in their reviews. So, though some have reported that all the units at their dealers have the problem, it cannot be true for every U310/U410 ultrabook.

Here's hoping it isn't a hardware problem.
