Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

Same problem here!

IdeaPad U310

Bios Version 13

Atheros network card

Windows 7 Home Premium / Ubuntu 12.10(alpha)

Brand new device

Need to be max. 30cm from the router's antennas to get a stable connection. WiFi gets noticably slower when approx 40cm away from the antenna, drops out regularly at 1m, practically impossible to get a connection at 2m distance between laptop and router.

This is a permanent error.

This behaviour is identical both in Windows and in Linux, so it's probably not a driver issue, since the two operating systems use completely different drivers, but show exactly the same issue.

Non-functioning WiFi on an Ultrabook practically renders the device unable to fulfill its primary purpose, which makes it a very expensive paper weight.

Other devices get excellent WiFi reception with a stable link and high transfer rates at 25m distance through 3 concrete walls from the same router.

While I agree that glitches can happen in engineering and ranting won't fix the problem any sooner, I also agree that this is a major showstopper! If customers shell out a month's income on a product they can expect it to have at least the very basic functionality operating reliably! Having this sort of error on a new device is completely unacceptable.

I hope lenovo considers this a critical error and acts on it accordingly! I for my part will return the device for a full refund if this malfunction is not fixed within the next 10 days. If that happens it will be the first and the last lenovo product I have ever purchased.

Looks like best solution is refund laptop to the shop and purchase something non-lenovo. Sad, it is not very easy for those who missed the time awaiting update more than 7/14 days and now they must get confirmation of the impossibility of repair at a local service provider. In Russia, this means 30 days of waiting until the laptop gathering dust on a shelf in the service.
I bought the laptop as a gift and was not able to detect this problem before. A stunning gift turned out. Thanks Lenovo.

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

2012-07-30, 12:40 PM

I am so nervous now.  My new U410 was a HUGE purchase for me and I was so excited, I have been without a computer for a month now and my laptop from 2005 has been on its last legs for quite awhile.  To have a new, fast device is something I have been looking forward to for a very long time.  I have been waiting nearly a month now for my U410 to arrive (despite an original ship date just a week after the order was placed) and it is supposed to be delivered today.  Now I am wondering if it will even work at all, since my primary use for it will be browsing the internet and only on WiFi, I will never use it on a wired connection.  I did a lot of research, or so I thought, but it is looking more and more like Lenovo was a terrible choice.  At this point, if my device has this WiFi issue I will be returning it immediately for a full refund and I will never, ever buy another Lenovo device and will tell everyone I know (including my company which has been debating switching from Dell to ThinkPads) that Lenovo is not a company to be trusted.  I really wish I knew more about their horrible customer service before I placed my order.  Fingers crossed that somehow my brand new U410 actually works.

Sad thing is that these are brand new devices. And even after 2.5 months after the issue is reported, there still is no fix. And I'm not even concerned about the other issues. (Energy management not working properly, brightness settings, very poor battery life and the choice of putting a GT610 in an ivy bridge laptop.)

I'm still hoping for a fix soon. Nothing else in it for me, far beyond return period.

Can't you just argue that the device does not work as advertised and demand your money back? The specification claims that the laptop supports WLAN-N, but in reality the connection is far slower than older WLAN-B/G devices, and also totally unstable.

You could point to this thread where lenovo staff admit that this problem for the U310 and U410 exists.

1. The device does not work as expected.

2. The problem is admitted by lenovo.

3. No solution is in sight.

Regarding all these points, you should really try (and be able) to get your money back.

I am also struggling with the terrible WiFi connection; an inability to connect to wireless networks, slow speeds, and dropped connections.   My two tivos, three laptops, two PCs, and four cell phones never have an issue with my home wireless, but this laptop is atrocious.  This laptop is simply not useable without a stable WiFi connection whether at home or any of the other networks I regularly access.  I have endured this frustration for the past two weeks and understandably my patience is wearing thin.  I certainly hope an actual fix is short coming or I guess I will need Lenovo to take back this laptop.   Needless to say if that is the case, it will unfortunately be the last Lenovo I ever purchase.

Please fix the problem or acknowledge this is a unrepairable design defect and provide a remedy.
