That's important, maybe Lenovo starts running after prominent tech websites kill them for this crap. And anyway, how the hell did all those testers fail to notice this really obvious defect? You think they got a different version? Otherwise I can't even attempt to explain their failure.

You guys should also start voting and rating on websites such as amazon, just to spare some folks out there the trouble we had.

Ive checked with customer service about the issue, it seems that the slow wifi is a hardware issue. Programmed the u310 for service pickup. Hopefully it wont last long. Ill keep you posted.

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

2012-08-07, 16:37 PM

I just installed the driver on the D: partition which is version 9.2.0.462 with the setup.exe in the WLAN directory and did some pc to laptop speed test compared to my dlink dwa140 rev B1 which uses a ralinkg RT2870 chip. I used RacoonWorks Speedtest 2.0 freeware.

The results are the same for both wifi cards. The Dlink dwa-140 B1 is a usb stick btw. Both wifi modules performed with 2000-2500 kb/s on an wlan internal speed test with a 50 mb file. The desktop (wired) served as the server and the laptop as the client. When moving away from the router like 5 meters but still with visuals to the router the Atheros internal network speed was reduced by the half to 1000-1300 kb/s. Still enough for my xDSL 2 mbit connection.

A test on speedtest.net cgave me an average of 1.7 mbit down on my 2mbit connection. My ping averaged  at 60 ms.

For a field test I downloaded the current Ubuntu iso image from the original site, no mirrors, the laptop next to the router one arm length away. My wired desktop gave me full xDSL 2000 speed of 230 kb/s. The dlink stick climbed slower to fully speed of 230 kb/s and the atheros card was stuck at 50 kb/s but very slowly climbed to 80 kb/s. After 10 mb the speed was around 100 kb/s and remained there as of yet (30mb downloaded so far).

Reports about slow Atheros AR9285 cards were already reported with other Laptop manufacturers like HP in 2010. No real working solution was offered.

Broadcom cards were reported also to have this problem, next to other pci-e mini cards. So a BIOS issues could be excluded I guess. An Intel chipset issue is to be exlcuded as well because there were no Ivy Bridge chipsets in 2010.

As the issue occurs on Linux aswell as you said lamecake it could be no Windows problem.

Dispite all that information I still think this Atheros AR9285 is the problem. No driver can make trash hardware good by miracle.

Hope to hear some good news from Andreyyy7

I was close to buying the u410 ultrabook but after reading all of the posts here, and seeing Lenovo's utter lack of ability or desire to fix it, I wonder if I should hold off and buy something else instead. If it's a hardware issue, Lenovo should pay for all costs to get it fixed in each computer.  If it's a software issue, shame on you Lenovo.  It is indefensible that a software fix could not be found.

I asked service about how they will fix wifi problem. Official answer:
Lenovo recommends to replace wireless adapter so we ordered a new one. Current status of your ticket: Awaiting of new part.

Non-official answer from shop service in skype:
Parts are not available, you will simply wait 45 days, after that they will give you a technical opinion on the impossibility of repair. Unfortunately, they can not give it at once, have not tried the recommendations of Lenovo. It threatens the loss of the status of an authorized service center.

As usual, nobody cares about a customer who has already paid their money. Great!

Does anybody know if i can use any of the following Intel mini pci-e WLan cards in the U410?;

Centrino Advanced-N 6235

Centrino Advanced-N 6230

Advanced N Wifi Link 6200

Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

Nothing else is available in my country for purchase. The Mardware Maintenance Manual doesnt list anything other than the Intel 2200N. (aside from crap cybartan/liteon/atheros models, which i can also not find for purchase)
