Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

2012-09-01, 9:18 AM

Good thing I did some research before I opened the box on this U410 I bought on an impulse.  My unit says it was assembled on 7/26/12, but I have seen very few responses in this thread from people who have never had problems, or people who have had their wifi problems fixed after having their pc serviced.  Last thing I need is to eat a 15% restocking fee for returning a brand new computer.

so, are there any u310 or u410 owners who have actually have working wifi?  By working, I mean with expected range and speed (i.e. not gimped)  Please respond, especially if you're a long time/ well established user.  Sorry, I have to take noob accounts with very few posts with a grain of salt.

Bought it yesterday; Retruning today. Piece of crap. I do not understand how Lenovo can stay in business selling products like the Ideapad and refusing to fix the problems with it. I wish I had read this forum before purchasing it.

@EtherealTML;

I got a U410 for a few months already. Noticed the WiFi problems immediately. Opened it up to changed the SSD and try some suggestions here with the wifi-module (looked at antennas etc), but this caused me to be unable to use any warranty again.

So, the built in wifi is crap, no warranty & no way to fix it myself. Dunno if USB3.0 is working properly, but also here, stopped to care. Just going to use it with a usb wifi module (this works at least), and gonna sell this thing next year and buy some other brand. No more Lenovo for me. Shame cause the machine is fine otherwise & Lenovo was good in my book. I found out Ideapad is now run by Medion in europe, which is basically a crap brand. So double proves my own point not to go for one again.

edit:

Another "funny" thing i noticed is that all stock (also pre 27-07-2012) is still for sale, no official reports of the problems nor any recall action. But i did notice recently alot of stores cut 100 euros off the price. Funny coincidence.

Hi Mark

Thanks for all the updates so far. Have recently (26th August, 2012) purchased the U410 model in Hong Kong and am having the same wi-fi issues as pointed by other users on the forum

Please advise if the service center in Hong Kong is already up-to-speed on this issue and if I reach out to them, they will be able to repair the system (feels sad saying so for a brand new out of the box laptop)

Looking forward to your immediate reply

Many thanks

DC

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

Hi All,

I was very interested to buy a U410 at the labor day sale. I was concerned about this wifi issue. Though, a representative in a previous post said that the models manufacured after July 23rd does not have this problem, there are several posts by users that states this problem still exists in newer models.

I contacted lenovo sales support through chat, to make sure that problem is fixed, or to get a guaranteed refund if the laptop I get had this issue. But, the representative did not confirm either. I advice anyone who is interested to buy this to wait for a reasonable response from the lenovo support before placing an order.

Hi All,

I want to give my feedback relating the Lenovo-support (Germany):

It took 2 weeks for repair (between sending by DHL and returning by DHL).

They did the following thing:

- Exchange wifi-card (from Broadcom to atheros)

- BIOS-Update

The Wifi-speed is now comparable to my other systems within my wifi-network and I'm glad to have now a working system...

I always had very good experiences with the TinkPad line. My impression of the IdeaPad-line is currently not that good...

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

Since nothing has been done since my last post I figured writing back in the forum is probably the only way Mark or any other moderator to get in touch with me...

I have my U410 with the wifi issue for well over a month now and I can't stress enough how frustrated I'm with Lenovo. I still have a U$400 Sony Vaio bought 5 years ago during black Friday that works great, if not better than this supposed ultrabook. That is actually the notebook I've been using since internet is a feature the U410 and U310 apparently DON'T have off the shelves, right?
My main problem is with the lack of support from Lenovo Brazil, where I unfortunately live, which doesn't even has a working phone number for customer support... In addition, they don't sell this model here and I can only dream with the day when they do so. I don't have any hopes for someone who is up to date with the wifi issue working at Lenovo Brazil, so if I happen to get in touch with them it would be a waste of time. I learned that some people (Brazilian) are also buying this notebook overseas and they are experiencing the same exact issues with wifi. I was then told Lenovo does not carry any support for U310/U410 owners because the models are not sold here, so It seems I'm left with a U$900 paper weight .

I bought this notebook in the US, therefore I should get help/support from Lenovo US, right?

@Mark: I have already sent you my info but I have not had an answer yet. I explained you my situation and I'm willing to send this notebook back. I can't wait any longer, I hope you can understand that. Lenovo has clearly messed up this time so it is fair you at least help us who unfortunately bought this defective machine.

@Andy: I see you have answered some people's questions, so if you can address my issue I appreciate that.

what is the lid made of? all metal?

metal weakens wifi signal.

maybe that's why the wifi signal sucks.

Look at asus transformer prime tablet. All metal = crappy wifi.

the asus tf300 tablet is all plastic, and has no wifi problem

Hi tom25, could you be so kind and share with us what bios version you have now after the update ?! it seems that lenovo does not want to upload the new bios under the support tab, i really do not see why since everybody is very angry with this issue.

Thank you in advance !

chinanrazvan,

There have been some instances where the BIOS from the factory are "newer" than the ones available on the web. Those BIOS are only meant for those specific machines. If the BIOS releases have fixes, they will release it on the support site.

If you are having this issue, do contact support to get the hardware checked as posted by Mark_Lenovo earlier.

Thanks.
