In my opinion I would not chance it.. You just never know! Spend your hard earned money on a unit that's problem free from the start! Lots of other choices out there to choose from..

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

okay so I am having the same problem with my ideapad u310, which i bought from the lenovo website last november 2012 which was manufactured on november 11 2012, i have been using this laptop for 5 months now. I am having a hard time connecting to different wifi locations such as school, coffee shop, libraries, and even AT HOME!AT HOME?!?!REALLY? and if i do get connections, the internet is supppppperrr sloooooowww. Sometimes, it would only give me limited access. I never know when my wifi will work or not. So, i tried calling the lenovo support group so many times, and they tried to blame it on the router/modem, they are trying to convince me to pay for that premium warranty for 170ish bucks!are they delirious??? I AM A BROKE COLLEGE STUDENT, i bought this laptop due to its great reviews and it is very affordable compare to those macs. Also, I am greatly offened how the last guy  i talked to on the phone tried to give me tutoring about how wifi works, i do know how to connect to wifi, thank you very much sir. PLEASE I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF HAVING THIS LAPTOP FIXED! WHAT CAN I DO? THANK YOOU SO MUCH

I was at staples yesterday looking at a clearance U510.  It seemed to be having the exact same issue.  It showed "limited" for the wireless connection.  I asked an employee if they could get it working.  They attempted to log into another router with no luck.  I asked if they could try the computer sitting next to it (a Yoga) and it worked just fine.

What is going on here?  I didn't check the manufacture date of the U510, but it isn't even the model that is supposed to be having trouble (even though the form factor is similar).

Here is the link to the U510 at Staples (if it doesn't get deleted -- item  990645):

It was a great price ($499), but I just didn't want to take a chance bringing it home when I could see right in the store that it was having problems.

Oh well. :(

@sarah sorry to be the bearer of bad news, for you and I we are out of luck. Even though your computer is a newer build.. Even though the rumors say the newer builds have no issue, I use yours case in point. I'm sure you are shocked to see your brand new computer has issues, it's how I feel as well as thousands and Lenovo has yet to address us officially on this board! Sad indeed...

As for galbar I wish I had the luxury of trying it before hand many if not most people roll the dice and order online... You never know whet you are getting till its at your door! The best you can do is if you are somewhat informed check the manu. Date before you open the box and if its a later date which really means nothing unbox it and hope for the best but more than likely you are going to be dissapointed as Sarah was... I wish I can tell you what to do, I wish that there was and official recall on these units.. We all wish Lenovo would just address this officially! Imagine if this type of issue happened to that "fruit" branded note book? It would be be all over the news, people would be in an uproar!

Hi All !

I can confirm that after certain modification and replacement of an existing wi-fi adapter to the branded one problems are gone.
The set of modification to be done:
1. To attach standard shielded foil to the interl side of bottom case.
2. Flash latest bios firmware with removed "white list" ot with PID VID of your new adapter.
3. Install branded wi-fi adapter. Preferably on latest available chip forom Atheros/Qualcomm ot Intel.

As a result you will have stable connection and no speed drops.
For those who are interesting in modification i can provide details.

p.s. respect to ikkoku for his confirmation that modification works.

For people this didn't work for. It got me halfway there I was working on an Intel Centrino N-2200. The only WiFi device that was having issues. After ensuring I had the latest driver from Intel, using their Auto Driver detection software, I changed the wireless mode to 802.11g, enabled Wireless N, and lowered the broadcast strength, but then I had to get into the router. I change the broadcasting mode from 802.11abg to 802.11 g and the frequency from 20/40 to 20 only, I left the rest of my settings default. This fixed my problem. I have had no issues since. I hope this helps people.

Hey,

i bought a Lenovo U510 MBM8EGE with an Intel Centrino Wireless N 2230.

After installing all driver updates from Intel the laptop has only still half of the speed as my old laptop ( Download speed: 7757 kbits/s instead of 13000 ).

@glowworm: Can I get a 13000-speed with your modification and will your modification erase the waranty.

I have the chance to give the notebook back within 14 days to the firm and I want to do it in case of can't getting it better.
