Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

Did it solve your low speeds issue as well?

My issue is that the speed is constantly fluctuating from 48 Mbps to 36, 24, 12, 8, etc. It is not fixed at 54Mbps like my other laptops. So if I use a external mini USB wifi adapter will I be able to get full speed at 54Mbps or will it be just as weak? Also my build date is 2/26/2013 so you would think that the issue would have been fixed by what Lenovo had stated previously.

Its faster. What method do you use to test to exact speed? I'll try it and let you know.

Changing the power settings helped me, but the speed is still low if I am far away from the wifi router (my other Laptop performs much better at that lower signal strength).

Lenovo has a white list, that means a different wifi card other than the original will only work if its on that list. the question that I have is has anyone just put in a nano wifi adapter on a usb slot and the results achieved. i'm thinking if the problem is the wifi antenna, wouldn't the adapter serve that purpose.

Check out the link below from this thread and it seems a few people have gone that route and everything works fine. I just ordered one of thes Edimax nano wifi adapters as well to fix this issue as well since everything else about the laptop is perfect for me.

Re: My new u310 gives really low speeds on wifi

So I just got this USB WiFi Adapter from Newegg and I'm having the same issue as before.  When I move like 10 feet away from the router my speeds starts to drop.  When I'm in another room upstairs it goes done to 24Mbps instead of of being at 54Mbps when I'm right next to the router.  I thought since the issue was with the internal wifi card and antenna that the external one should perform as normal to my other laptops since it can do up to 150Mbps.  Is it just this particular brand that might have weak antenna as well or what?

When I am downstairs it flactuates between 12-24Mbps.  Do I need to try a few other usb wifi adapters to see if one that maintains better signal thoroughout the house?

Update: I used the wifi adapter on a laptop downstairs and it too gets only 18-24Mbps when using this adapter.  When using the Realtek internal one It fluctuates between 36-48Mbps.  So it does seem that is the adapter that is insufficient and does not have enough power to maintain high speeds. Looks like this one is going back and I will try another one.

I also had the same case, but with my Y470 and Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 (Lenovo FRU edition). I'm getting low internet speeds despite the 144 Mbps link speed. In addition, I get 4 bars out of 5 two feet away from the router!. I figured that no amount of software tweaking or driver updates would resolve this issue. Luckily, some really nice people modded the BIOS without that whitelist restriction and I'm able to upgrade to the Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 without any issues. Now I get my full internet speed plus a constant and sustained 300 Mbps link speed 20 feet away from the router. I also get to connect to 5 GHz band as a bonus!

I don't now if there's a person who modded u310/u410 bios to remove the whitelist on bios modding forum already. This is the only successful solution unfortunately.

Cbatius2,

So you had to open the laptop and put in new wifi card correct once the whitelist was removed from BIOS correct? I don't really want to go that route if I can find usb wifi adapter that is stable and maintains speeds similar to a builtin wifi card on my other laptops.

Correct.

I don't like usb wifi dongle even the nano versions since I prefer to have less external device from my laptop except for the usb mouse which I use for quicker tasks. I also figured that if I'm going to fix the problem, I just wanted to get the best fix that I could think of which is just get a dual band WiFi adapter since it offers far less interference than the 2.4 GHz band as well as arguably higher signal strength due to taking advantage of the two internal antennas that are already in the laptop. In addition, the mini PCI-e port is far faster than USB 2.0 so it allows a good internal wifi adapter to get sustained high link speed. I'm connected to the 5 GHz band right now and getting 5 bars all throughout the house (30 ft max) with link speeds of 270 - 300 Mbps using E2000 Linksys router.
