It's not the 2230 card, not the drivers, it's the ANTENNA

i5 u310 refurb, 2230 card.  Disconnected the internal antenna, hooked-up an external that I had from an old router, and boom! - 50 meg down on FIOS (50/25).  Hooked internal antenna back up, down to 12-15 down.  Hmmm...

Same card is in my Toshiba P50 haswell, and it doesn't have these issues.  Now to see if I can hack an internal antenna together that works.

Hi there,

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad U310 mid-last year and have had WiFi connectivity issues with it as soon as I bought it (i.e. very slow WiFi, often doesn't connect at all) - as a result I have bought 2 more extra WiFi routers to boost my speeds etc (to very slight improvement). Also updated all drivers regularly, even reinstalling, etc.

However I recently stumbled quite a few articles/threads with people saying this is a genuine manufacturers issues which is known (!). My laptop is now out of warranty (as I've tried for over a year to try and 'fix' the issue myself thinking it was a local thing rather than a new laptop thing.

Wondering what the official remediation is? The laptop is practically unusable with WiFi (which is about 90% of the user requirement!).

Thanks :)

Before I found out that it's the antennas, I bought an inexpensive Belkin N300 micro usb wifi adapter. Cheaper than extra routers, gives me full speed - but only on the USB 2 port - on the USB 3 ports, no better than the internal...?!? Anyway, it does work, if you don't mind having a smallish dongle hanging off the side, plus the loss of a USB port.

Hi All !

I can confirm that after certain modification and replacement of an existing wi-fi adapter to the branded one problems are gone.
The set of modification to be done:
1. To attach standard shielded foil to the interl side of bottom case.
2. Flash latest bios firmware with removed "white list" ot with PID VID of your new adapter.
3. Install branded wi-fi adapter. Preferably on latest available chip forom Atheros/Qualcomm ot Intel.

As a result you will have stable connection and no speed drops.
For those who are interesting in modification i can provide details.

p.s. respect to ikkoku for his confirmation that modification works.

Glowworm,

Would you be able to PM me the fix.

Thanx

Hey, could someone post more information about the fix i've seen going around, something about a metal shielding.

I would like to be able to get the wireless working properly as I need my U410 for University. Ive already tried updating the drivers and ive also switched the two antennas around which did improve the wireless ever so slightly.

Ive considered buying a new PCI card to put in there, but other posts lead me to believe that the card isn't the issue and that I probably wouldn't be able to do so without modding the UEFI anyway.

Thanks.

Here are the latest drivers that I instlalled: http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=61&system=8

Ok I found the page with the images of the shielding from glowworm thanks to a user on tonymacx86, http://www.tonymacx86.com/mountain-lion-laptop-support/102901-u310-wifi-problems-anyone-fix.html. The two users on there both appear to have done the metal shielding fix using an old laptops shielding, but I don't have a spare laptop. They also both use a specific wifi card.

I'd like to know what material it is that you are using for this fix and also where to get a modded UEFI if anyone has made one.

Thanks
