EDIT NOTE : This post has been moved to the top of the thread to assist us with an investigation & analaysis of the reported issues. For all future posting please continue topost in this thread.

Hello everybody !

I have the same issue. S300 Model name: 9803

I have this pc for 1 day...

I called the support. There is no solution (french support). I'm afraid he can not flash the bios and offers me to change the motherboard. I bought the pc 160€ (213USD) and i think a motherboard is around 200€ (267USD).

The analysis by a technician costs 49 / 65USD (including shipping)

Can you tell me if you have succeeded in doing something?

I do not know what to do ...

Best regards,

ps: sorry for my english

S300 bios bricked

2013-09-01, 15:04 PM

Hi today I tried to install the new bios that Lenovo uploaded on the drivers section.

Downloaded the file 6dcn96ww.exe for win 7 and 8.

I have windows 8 x64 in UEFI , laptop came with freedos

After downloading the file made a cold restart and plugged in AC adapter..

Then I run the .exe file, process started deleting old bios, then writing the new blocks when suddenly fan started in full speed and 5 seconds later laptop powered off. Thought that it will reboot itself but no. from that moment it is dead. No led, power button isn’t responding, nothing. Power brick is ok checked with other laptop.

How to fix bios now ?

I expect you ha tried pressing the novo button on the side. As far as I know there is no way you yourself can revive your laptop again when it can't even boot. So I guess you have to contact the vendor or Lenovo support to have it repaired or replaced.

For me the BIOS update went without problems. I myself have activated the BIOS rollback feature within the BIOS, I don't know how it works though.

searching the forum found that pressing  Fn+B+Power pressed for 15secs and then releasing them, starts the laptop in a sort of bios recovery mode.

it searches usb drives for bios files and recovers.

But for me after a minute or two just shuts down again because I dont have suitable files.

Are these files available online?

OK, so it's not completely dead, there might be a solution. I don't know if you can make a bootable USB installer for the BIOS using the BIOS update .exe file located on Lenovo drivers & software page, or maybe just copying the file to an USB drive.

To my knowledge the BIOS file it self is not an .exe file but has it's own file format, but the Lenovo BIOS recovery mode might be able to extract the file inside the .exe file.

I would personally still contact Lenovo Support to here if they can provide a solution.

hi Chris,

In addition to what have already been suggested, you might also want to check these threads to help you out on recovering

LENOVO BIOS RECOVERY - for phoenix BIOS

Undocumented INSYDE BIOS recovery method

How to recover from a bad BIOS Flash (Phoenix BIOS ONLY)

If you get your unit up and running, do backup your current BIOS by using this tool:

Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit

Tried these methods, nothing worked.

Same behavior every time after 2 minutes laptop shuts down. Disconnect a/c , reconnect nothing happens. Seems that the files are wrong because the usb flashdrive led flashes only once and then stops. Tried 2 flashdrives and all 3 ports

hi til3tsio,

Upon checking the BIOs file for the S300, you seem to have the Insyde BIOS. Doing a google search led me to this blog which has the same steps as the INSYDE BIOS recovery method above. It appears that you may need to put a BIOS file on the flashdrive.

If you're still unable to get it worknig, I recommend you send the unit to lenovo to reflash the BIOS.

I'm sorry that I join to this topic but I have the same issue. BIOS upgrade and brick :( . And Fn+B+Power-method works too. Maybe will be helpful if someone will upload old bios ROM and say how this file should be called on a pendrive (before flashing). My model: S300 59-358141.

Hi, I have the same problem. Computer shut down during bios upgrade (but the power button and CapsLock indicator stayed on...for a long time)....After battery removal (only way to fully shut down) I was not able to boot. Only thing working is the BIOS recovery mode (Fn+B+Start /Fn +R+Start). I tried many* possilble filenames, but with no luck. Flashdrive is (acording to LED) working, but after 3-5 minutes, computer shuts down and nothing changed...

*) acording to HEX research, i think the filename should be VIUS3.bin - but it didn't work for me :-(

hi guys,

Since the tool that's listed on the blog above doesn't really show the correct file that should be put in the flashdrive to run the BIOS recovery, you may need to send the unit in for service to reflash the BIOS.
