Removing Screws From Hard Drive Cover on an IdeaPad U460s

I am having a heck of a time getting these two screws out just to remove the hard drive cover on this new laptop. I've owned lots of laptops and disassembled many and I've never seen screws like this. They are philips but VERY shallow.

What am I missing?

Here is an untouched screw from the memory cover.

Here is the screw I'm working on (on the bottom)

Unfortunately I can't get them to budge. And they really are stripped so now I'm going to have to use a stripped screw removal tool or something. Never seen anything like this.

it's kinda hard but you need to pull the cover after you removed the screws.
