Run VMWare Workstation in the ideapad?

2008-12-23, 3:09 AM

Has anyone here tried to run Virtual Machines on the ideapad? I'm wondering how the performance is.  Part of my work is to use Virtual Machines to test applications.  I know I should get a powerful laptop, but due to limited budget, I have no choice.

I run VM`s on my ideapad y530 all the time and performance is quite good. Of course you have to plan ram assignment visely (Vista uses about 800mb in my config) also for further vm performance increase I use external usb hdd (I run images from there).

Hi there, running images on a USB hd? Isn't that going to affect performance since most USB HDs are slow?

i run VM's on an Ideapag S10. my OS is WinXP and I upped it to 2gb or ram.

i tried both VM WS 5.x and MS VPC (whatecver the latest one is) The perfance seems a litttle better with MS VPC than the VM WS. I dont mind losing the VM WS features so I stuck with VPC.

imho hdd is laptop`s bottleneck, so I swap mine with 7200rpm 16mb and closed it in external enclosure (5400rpm 8mb). I`m very hapy with that solution. I can run now 5 vm`s simultaneously (with reasonable ram assignment) in my test lab with good performance. Will test esata solution now :)

Although you have swapped external drive with a 7200 16MB, what about the interface? Since it's USB, it's still slow, no?

I swapped my internal hdd with 7200rpm. My external is 5400 rpm (old internal). You`re right that usb is not so fast but imho it`s better to leave OS and all aplication running on internal and VM`s on external with that solution we can avoid internal hdd bottleneck, I think. Anyway I test it and my VM`s run a lot faster on external that on internal hdd. Just about 2 hours ago i get esata expresscard controler and my read/write speed to external hdd speed up even twice and a half. I test VM`s and they speed up too. they boot up and starts a lot faster.

One word of warning. I have discovered the hard way that at least on the Y430 Lenovo has disabled Intel VT-x and has no BIOS option to enable it as other vendors do.  Depending on which OS you intend to vitualize this may or may not be an issue.   For instance I use Virtualbox instead of Vmware and Solaris guests are extremely slow unless vt-x is enabled.
