Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

2009-04-22, 15:09 PM

In case anyone else is disturbed by the flooding warnings in the Event Viewer, caused by the Fan Control Program, here is some info. I was hoping to find some nice registry trick like writing "AcpiecWarnings=0" and disabling all those warnings.

Unfortunately I couldn't find such an easy solution. Although I found this:

http://winhlp.com/node/43#comment-3

It is a rather dirty trick, but nevertheless it works like charm.

After applying the trick, you can also create 2 reg files for having the warnings on and off just like that:

File: acpiec warnings on.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPIEC]
"ImagePath"=hex(2):73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,44,00,\
  52,00,49,00,56,00,45,00,52,00,53,00,5c,00,61,00,63,00,70,00,69,00,65,00,63,\
  00,4e,00,6f,00,4c,00,6f,00,67,00,2e,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,00,00

File: acpiec warnings off.reg

 Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPIEC]
"ImagePath"=hex(2):73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,44,00,\
  52,00,49,00,56,00,45,00,52,00,53,00,5c,00,61,00,63,00,70,00,69,00,65,00,63,\
  00,2e,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,00,00

Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

2009-04-22, 19:52 PM

All,

I have been back, but don't have any new updates from our end.  Obviously 66 is out, many have grabbed it and applied.

I'm sure we will continue to have updates to the bios for both machines over time.

I'm curious where everyone thinks the goal line is?  The tone of the discussion here seems to have changed from that of extreme frustration to that of an enthusiast forum where some very detail knowledge is being shared

I think the Lenovo team has made some progress, and obviously the community has made some amazing breakthroughs as well - I continue to be amazed by the technical knowledge being demonstrated in customizing the settings.

A point of clarification - there are 4 fan speed levels not 8 as was either misquoted, or I previously misspoke some four or five pages back.

What do you think about putting together a summary post that wraps up this thread, and then start a new one that is dedicated to tweaking / tuning the fan operation?   At 80+ pages, this discussion is getting unwieldy for new members and a lot of the first 30-40 pages is now pretty obsolete information.   What do you think?

Kudos to all,

Mark

Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

Mark: Welcome back!  I do agree that the thread is getting a bit unwieldy and perhaps a "breakaway" discussion needs to be formed to address the specific mods and developments.  I notice too that a new (66) BIOS has been released for the S10e.  Are there any plans for a similar release for the S10 as well?

Dresslerc: I'm still using the S10 Fan Control V.1.0.0.0  (BIOS 58).  Any plans for another upgrade that will address the battery/power level indicator?  Other than that small issue, I'm still finding that it runs perfectly, controlling the fan really well on my machine.

Thanks to you  both for your continued help and support.  Keep up the good work!

Good to see you are back Mark. I second your remarks about starting a Fan Noise and Suppression Techniques (lol)

The previous pages would seem quite imposing to new users and potential buyers. I sit here in my study come guest room typing on my newly flashed 66 BIOS s10e. I have 2 Firefox windows (each with a couple of tabs), MS Word and an Access db open. Nothing too taxing. The fan is not too intrusive but has been on for the last 20 minutes non stop. I am on battery, low power scheme btw.

An improvement for sure.

i flashed the new 66 bios yesterday and im quite frustrated.. the temps are now much higher than before so the netbook feels hot to touch.. previous bios idled at about 40C, now its around 60C.. also the fan is always on and audiable, it rarely switches off.. and under load temp goes near 80C with the fan at highest speed..

EDIT: i like the addition of the option to disable beep when connecting charger, and the lcd backlight now switches off when i close the lid..

EDIT2: im using everest to measure temps..

nagatyh - I don't think the temperature of the netbook has actually increased, just the reported value. Thats what happened with the S10 newer bios anyway. I use an IR temp gun on the bottom of my S10 and noticed no difference in temp to the bottom of the S10 even though the reported temp is higher.

Obviously - tweaking the BIOS will only work to a certain degree, and I doubt that this will make everybody happy.

I think the goal line must be where Lenovo makes a fan control program without bugs (no offence, dresslerc - it must be hard to make a program without having the hardware to test it on).Then you could argue that Lenovo will not make such a program due to the risks of overheating and such. This could easily be controlled by inputting some command that turns on the fan at XX degrees - but this value should be quite high (at least 80+).Then the user would be able to set his own parameters for fan behaviour.

 I totally agree with this. Do you volunteer for the job? :)

@nagatyh, TheSteve

Especially the difference to Tj max reported by the cpu sensor remains exactly the same (I know that the sensor is not good at all, but the value has not changed). For me the surface and air temperature is the same on 66 than on 57, but the fan runs longer and may not even stop for 1/2 an hour or more (by bios control...), that seems to be normal. But for me not silent enough for use at university.

Perhaps your high temperatures are just a Tj max problem in Everest. Do Core Temp 0.99.5 or Real Temp 3.00 report the same values?

@all

By the way, I did a little workaround of the NHC profile to work with the 66. Available here, it's the attachment at the end of the displayed post. And the same procedure as every....... use at own risk. No issues for me up till now. Due to the same offset on S10 and S10e now it should work on both devices.

I also think that we should split off the thread and somebody writes a little "once-upon-a-time" summary post with links to the new separated threads.

Good night

Carsten

Edit: And perhaps the first posts in the new threads should also summarize the main aspects of the specific topic.

Edit2: Broken link fixed

A lot of people use their netbooks with free operating systems - mostly linux.

So please LENOVO dont come up with a windows-only app for fan control.

BTW - ubuntu runs great - almost everything works out-of-the-box ...
