Re: [S10/S10e Fan Problems Collecting Info for Lenovo] S10 fan runs too fast, too often, too loud

2009-04-28, 22:47 PM

Hi

bought a Linux S10e Model 4068-46G 4 days ago.  Great little machine !

It came with 51 Bios level (prod. date is Dec 22, 2008) and I flashed version 14CN66WW Bios via bootable USB stick after one day of updating SLED 10.2

I noticed a minor improvment in fan behaviour but the fan is starting to run soon after there is more load on the CPU.

I am not really bothered by the fan. CPU is running on an "adaptive frequency" setting.

By the way: Reading BIOSReleaseNote.txt, contained in the 14CN66WW package, gives you some valuable info

-> PHLASH16.EXE /C /S  /FORCE BIOS.WPH when booted from DOS - one way for Linux users to flash their S10e.

-> BIOS REV.: 14CN 58 WW   EC REV.: 14EC52WW is contained in the 14CN66WW package which was pulled today - to my surprise !

Hi

Where is the heat in a S10e coming from ? I guess the fan has to take care of the "combined" heat produced inside the S10e.

It looks like the fan is cooling the Atom CPU and MCH chip

see page 78

IdeaPad S9e, S10e, and S10 Hardware Maintenance Manual

Wikipedia:

source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Atom

While the Atom processor itself is relatively power efficient for an x86 microprocessor, the chipsets used with it are currently not as power efficient. For example while the N270 chip itself commonly used in netbooks has a maximum TDP of 2.5 W, the Intel Atom platform with the 945GSE Express chipset has a specified maximum TDP of 11.8 W, with the processor only making up a relatively small portion of the total power. Individual figures are 2.5 W for the N270 processor, 6 W for the 945GSE chipset and

3.3 W for the 82801GBM I/O controller.

Dresslerc: Thanks for providing the source code!  However, I have no idea how to edit the program myself, so I hope some of you other more savvy people out there can help with modifying this otherwise great program so that the AC/Battery Meter/Power Level Issue is resolved.  Thanks in advance!

Re: S10/S10e Fan Problems - Collecting Info for Lenovo

I'm using a S9, and upgraded to version 58 bios 2 weeks ago. I see the same problem that the battery disappears suddenly while using, and ends with either a cross on battery, or AC power in. I have to hibernate, remove and re-insert the battery to clear this out.  Quite annoying.

So, it seems v.58 bios help the fan problem but creates another problem. There is no version 66  bios equivalent for S9 as I scan thru previous post suggesting that might solve this.......

Is this problem going to be addressed?

Oops..find in another thread stating that S10FanCtrl can cause this "battery disappear" problem. So, I'll wait and see.

An updated BIOS with support for all models should be uploaded to the site shortly - estimate is about a week.

Do I understand correctly, that there is a new Bios coming for the S10e?
