I see you are also running Linux - and that the BIOS update utility available from Lenovo is an .exe for windows only. How do you run it under Linux?

Due multiboot with xp,w7,ubuntu, my update is easier i use the normal winpflash...
but this could help ya

This method of making the FreeDOS USB with makebootfat did not work for me - I had to resort to a pretty roundabout method in the end: I created a bootable FreeDOS USB stick on a Windows machine, using the HP create bootable USB utility. Then, since that didn't boot properly either, I replaced the command.com and kernel.sys files on the USB stick with the ones from the .zip archives unstablx.zip and commandx.zip, which I had downloaded as per your instructions.
For some reason that yielded a working freedos usb stick, which I will now retain for future times of need!
The BIOS flash went off without a hitch, and the loud beep is now gone.
